Anybody with an ounce of interest in fashion is aware that the Alexander Wang X H&M collection debuted last Thursday in New York. The event was attended by A-listers including Dakota Fanning, the soon-to-be Mr. Aniston (or, the artist formerly known as Justin Theroux), Solange Knowles, and Jessica Chastaine. Other highlights were parkour, killer 90s R&B, and a performance by Missy Elliot. Do I know this because I was there? No. I saw the whole bloody thing on Twitter.
Love it, hate it, or just reluctantly retweet it, Twitter has undeniably become an integral part of fashion culture. With designers, models, and PR girls regularly interacting directly with their fans (or detractors), there has never been a better way to buzz than the little blue bird. Not only this, but media and bloggers are also giving the general public access to the most intimate parts of the fashion week process — from the runway show itself to the nitty-gritty of the backstage. With social media this good, who needs to watch America’s Next Top Model anymore? Does anybody watch America’s Next Top Model anymore (read: ME)?
As we did for New York Fashion Week, it seemed only appropriate that World MasterCard Fashion get its own list of the top tweeters to follow as well! Enjoy… and please retweet responsibly.
Jay Strut – @JayStrut
Whether he’s hanging out with Donatella Versace in Milan or kicking it with celebs at TIFF, Jay Strut seems effortlessly comfortable no matter what sartorial circle he’s floating in. Arguably Toronto’s most famous – and infamous – blogger, he is a key person to follow if you want the front-row perspective from World MasterCard Fashion Week.
Gail McInnes – @GailMcInnes
Crowned the “Canadian Countess of Fashion” earlier this year, Gail McInnes is a Scottish-born, Toronto-raised PR maven. With two companies currently in her roster, Magnet Creative Management and Stylist Box, she is a familiar face at all the city’s most fabulous soirees. Beyond this, she has quite a few clients presenting at World MasterCard Fashion Week; meaning you’ll get all of the best tidbits from their perspectives as well. Oh yes, and tonnes of backstage access, photos from parties, photos from after-parties, and photos from after-after-parties.
Bernadette Morra – @BernadetteMorra
As editor-in-chief of Canada’s largest style and beauty magazine, FASHION, Bernadette Morra is one of the few Canadian media people who physically attends most of the world’s fashion weeks (as opposed to just watching them live online… not that there’s any shame in that). She’s experienced, educated, and you really can’t get much higher than this in terms of Canuck tastemakers. Morra will also have the scoop on all things related to the Mercedes-Benz Start Up Award and Fashion Magazine’s First Annual Toronto Fashion Week Awards.
Kim Newport – @KimNewport
Head designer of Pink Tartan and married to the head of Joe Fresh? Kim Newport’s life seems too good to be true. Canada’s fashion Cinderella, and her oh-so-stylish Prince Charming, will be presenting on Monday and Tuesday of Spring 2015’s World MasterCard Fashion Week, respectively. Frequently named as one of Toronto’s most influential trendsetters, she’s also front row at all the best shows and at all of the most exclusive parties.
Rock-It Promotions – @RockItPromo
The main PR tour-de-force behind World MasterCard Fashion Week, Rock-It is present for almost everything happening at the tents. They have behind the scenes shots, photos right from the catwalk, and are fabulous retweeters of all things to do with the events. Rock-It is basically your one-stop #WMCFW shop!
Coco Rocha – @CocoRocha
Arguably the best-known Canadian model of the moment, Coco Rocha has an insanely active social media presence. Somewhere between fittings, photoshoots, and flights, the model maintains a very healthy following on Twitter, Vine, and Instagram. Luckily for us Torontonians, she’ll be in town to present her new book, Study of Pose, at Holt Renfrew Yorkdale Wednesday, October 22 — which probably means she’s going to squeeze in a couple shows at World MasterCard Fashion Week.
Honourable Mention: @ViewTheVibe
We’ll be covering and tweeting all the top shows at World MasterCard Fashion, interviewing the designers backstage, and snapping the best street-style looks from outside the tents. Follow us and stay tuned, Vibers!
