Toronto Canada Day 2012

This weekend is pretty freakin’ massive in the city. We have Toronto Pride 2012, the Euro Cup finals, and, of course, Canada Day. To help you wade through the barrage of events, attractions, parties, and the like going down on our nation’s holiday, here’s a fanciful guide to help you exude patriotism no matter your social inclinations.

BIG EVENTS
Canada Day at Mel Lastman Square
One of the perennial favourites on July 1st in Toronto, the celebrations at Mel Lastman Square in Northy York are heavily attended and enjoyed by families and tourists alike. This year sees Saidah Baba Talibah, The Slakadeligs with Justin Nozuka, and of course the big fireworks finale.

Canada Day at Casa Loma
The city’s famed castle is hosting some Canada Day festivities of their own, including guided tours by costumed interpreters, themed archery workshops, and the Queens Own Rife Regimental band.

Toronto Jazz Festival Closing Night
The Jazz fest is almost over, and they’re calling Canada Day the end to the Toronto season. If you’ve yet to catch a show with some cool cats groovin’ away, July 1st is your last chance to hone in on the musical wonder.

Red, White and Vinyl Festival
Vinyl 95.3 is hosting this concert special at Woodbine Park on Canada Day, with performances from Carole Pope, Ian Thomas, The Spoons, and more. Followed by fireworks at dusk in the beaches…sounds perfect, right?

Canada Day at Harbourfront Centre
The hub for showcasing international cultures during the summer in Toronto, the Harbourfront Centre’s Canada Day celebrations include ‘Going Global’, on Thursday, June 28th through Sunday, July 1st. The big day, however, sees the International Marketplace, live performances by Wibi, Martin Samuels, the Toronto All Star Big Band, and also an ‘Iron Chef’ competition Poutine edition judged by Mildred’s Temple Kitchen matriarch Donna Dooher, The Grid‘s Karon Liu, and food writer Mary Luz Mejia.

Digital Dreams Music Festival
On all weekend, the Digital Dreams Music Festival closes out this Toronto celebration on Canada Day. Taking place at the Flats at Ontario Place, the DDMF sees acts like A-Trak, Major Lazer, Sydney Blu, and a slew of others participating in the first-and-only multi-day EDM music festival in Downtown Toronto.
