A world where nobody keeps up with the Kardashians seems like a far-flung dream. But what if it’s about to become the reality?
Scrolling through social media newsfeeds often feels like flipping through a Kardashian family photo album. The world is constantly watching the lives of Kim, Kris, Kourtney, Khloe, Kylie, Kendall and Bruce as they face divorce, plastic surgery allegations, gender reassignment surgery and corset training. Since Keeping Up With The Kardashians first aired in 2007, it seems that hearing about the minutiae of their lives have been unavoidable.
Until now. Meet #KardBlock, a browser extension that filters out all things Kardashian.
The hope behind KardBlock is to get more people engaged in things that matter. Its inventor, James Shamsi, told the Daily he wants “less people to click on pictures of Kim’s boobs and more people to click on donation pages.”
Shamsi couldn’t stand that every time a Kardashian left their California home, the events of their afternoon would trump the news. “I didn’t sign up for these sites to hear about things like that. I am interested in deeper issues. But every platform seems interested in Kardashian news to the point where everything else gets crushed.” He decided that it was high time people had the option to disengage with the most Googled family in the universe.
Shamsi is so convinced that his app will benefit the greater good, he is charging users zero dollars. He has no interest in stealing the Kardashians’ fame and fortune; he just wants people to care about what’s important again. “This is all about making a change that will potentially impact the lives of a lot of people … We are hoping to make a splash with this and change the way the Internet actually works.”
We’re just excited for all the spare time we’re going to have on our hands.
