If you have spent any time with fashion people this summer chances are you’ve noticed – somewhere in the usual melange of black, mesh, and leather – the emergence of a new material reminiscent of a wetsuit. Known more commonly as neoprene (or “scuba”), this fab fabric has become something of a darling among those who love to dive into trends.
A symptom of our culture’s current obsession with all things 90s nostalgia, neoprene originally gained prominence about 17 years ago, though it never quite caught on. This time around, however, designer advocates including heavy-hitters like Givenchy, Alexander Wang, and Montreal’s Denis Gagnon have all been making the most of the material. Naturally, fast fashion retailers have also caught on and now you can shop for a swimsuit sweater at spots like Zara, Topshop/Topman, and H&M.
The main qualities of neoprene include the fabric’s ability to maintain a structured shape and silhouette, its unusually soft and spongy texture, and the fact that it is relatively well-insulating. While normally it consists of a majority of polyester blend, certain retailers are also carrying cotton “neoprene-feel” items as well. To help you sort out the scuba scene, we’ve thrown together a list of key pieces so you can rock the neoprene trend…
