I love a good night out at the theatre! Paired with an early dinner and some after-show drinks it is the perfect excuse for girls night, family night or date night and as luck would have it, the city of Toronto offers a slew of onstage productions for all audiences, thespians and novices alike. And as always, at View the Vibe we like to be sure that you are up-to-date on all the city banter. So if trips to the theatre is your thing, we’ve got you covered! Here’s where to get your fill of culture this month…
The Rocky Horror Show, Lower Ossington Theatre, Now through November 23rd
I love this quaint, local theatre and have had the pleasure of visiting a few times now. It also happens to be located on the hot Ossington strip so there are loads of options for pre-dinner and post-drinks. Affordable ticket prices make it a good plan for a night out and this cult comedy shouldn’t disappoint.
Alligator Pie, Young Centre for the Performing Arts, Now through December 1st
A definite must-see for the little ones in your world, this adorable show will indulge their creativity and provide wonderful memories all set to the soundtrack of children’s poems from celebrated Canadian poet Dennis Lee. The perfect excuse to spend an afternoon in the Distillery District warming up with hot chocolate and loved ones… is it Christmas yet?!
The Gravitational Pull of Bernice Trimble, Factory Theatre, Now through December 1st
Toronto has oodles of talent and it is not exclusive to the bigger stages of our realm. Smaller theatres provide more intimacy and let the audience get closer to the amazing actors that our city is home to as well as writers, directors and the incredible crew of people that help tell a story. This play paints a “heartbreaking but funny portrait of a family in crisis.”
Evil Dead: The Musical, Randolph Theatre, Now through December 22nd
Halloween may be over but blood is still being spilled over in the Annex. A hilariously talented cast provides tons of sexual innuendos, groan worthy one-liners and the perfect escape from holiday countdown madness.
Aladdin, Ed Mirvish Theatre, Now through January 5th, 2014
Another opportunity to get your fam-jam on with songs and characters that everybody knows! For you dads out there, use this as the perfect excuse to ‘get the kids outta the way’ while mum does the Christmas shopping. And that gives you mums an excellent opportunity for a uninterrupted, mid-shop glass of wine… everyone’s a winner.
Les Miserables, Princess of Wales Theatre, Now through February 2nd, 2014
Not new to the city but worth mentioning in case you haven’t had a chance to see it yet. An essential for your ‘seen it’ list… and no… the movie will definitely not cut it.
The Little Mermaid, The Elgin Theatre, November 22nd to January 14th
Hans Christian Anderson’s timeless tale of the beautiful mermaid and the fight for her handsome prince is brought to life on stage. If like me you were (are) a huge Disney movie fan, this will likely float your whimsical boat and of course is just perfect to drag the kids/cousins/nieces/nephews along ensuring that you will definitely be their most favourite, even if it’s just for one day.
Once, Royal Alexandra Theatre, November 26th to January 5th
For any man who is trying to win over that special gal, this is the show to do it. This musical tells the love story of an Irish street musician and his haunting love songs which lead him to an intense love with a beautiful young woman… yup, this ticks all the romance boxes for sure. Tack on dinner and drinks and you have just scored yourself some serious points.
