Last Rep. Fitness believes in training everyone like an athlete
I had no idea what to expect from Last Rep. at Yonge/Wellesley. Truth be told, I had never heard about it before. But this was exactly the point of my quest for the best gyms in Toronto – to find these hidden gems and showcase the VIBE. From the outside, it looked like your typical retail space on Yonge. It was early morning so the street was still waking up. As I walked up the stairs, I started to realize that this gym was no joke and I was in for a real treat. A place that believes in competitive spirit, fearless nature and unity, here’s what my experience was like at Last Rep.
The Prep
Checking In
Getting in and getting set up was pretty straight forward. Most of these gyms, I’m realizing have shifted everything online so everyone who is registered has already done so and paid in advance. Most won’t even take cash. All you do is sign in and away you go. The instructor was welcoming and didn’t hesitate to give me the background of the gym and what they’re looking to accomplish. The space was vast and quite impressive.
The Change Rooms
One of the best facilities I visited, they pride themselves on individual showers and a co-ed environment so it’s just one large change room with individual, closed door stalls and showers for privacy. I wasn’t able to snap a pic unfortunately for this reason (didn’t really feel like getting smacked that early in the morning…) Last Rep. is very clean, well-kept and comfortable.
The Workout
The Instructor(s)
The trainer was super nice and very fit. I always like to train with someone who practices what they preach, which is why I’ve always had issues at these big box gyms where you find instructors smoking in the back. Anyways, he took the time to explain the gym, where everything is, what to expect and made it a point to know me and everyone else by name. When he was going through the circuit, he made sure to keep an eye on me, being the newbie and all. Great service.
The Intensity, Quality + Difficulty
The workout was a HIIT style workout that uses a heart rate monitor to track performance, similar to Orangetheory. The room below is where you do these group style training, but they also have the main gym area and a couple other areas for one-on-one training sessions as well. Instructors can actually rent space from them to come and train their own clients here.
It was an overall intense workout with a good variety of exercises targeting all muscle groups. Similar to most of these group classes, you challenge yourself, however there are different levels depending how advanced you are. The trainers do a good job in offering 2-3 options of each exercise depending on your strength and experience. Overall, it was a good quality workout and built in such a way you can attend everyday working different muscles. All fitness levels can join in on the fun at Last Rep. any time and can easily integrate into the community.
The VIBE
The Amenities
This place had it all and really put effort in making a top notch facility, equipped with towel service, lockers, private showers and everything else you need to handle your business. The place is spacious so you never have to worry about long waits or getting in the way of others.
The Crowd + Community
Here you’ll find all shapes and sizes from all walks of life. The one thing they had in common was the communal respect for one another and the desire to get in shape. Everyone was welcoming and helpful and you really get a sense of being a part of a team here.
The Aftermath
Learned some new workouts here for sure and as results some new muscles were activated. Not overly intense but it can be if you push yourself. You will feel a good soreness the next day like you had a solid full body work out.
