Gray hair might be having its moment as a fall 2014 beauty trend, but the silver hue could already be on the brink of extinction, at least in terms of those who rock it naturally. That’s right — as much as worldwide beauty giant L’Oreal has been keeping their not-yet-released gray hair remedy on the down-low, the breakthrough pill has already been patented by the international cosmetic brand and might hit store shelves as early as 2015… which is convenient given that it’s 2014.
So what exactly makes this pill so special that it needs to be patented? How exactly will it combat the loss of pigment in hair, which is the reason it turns gray in the first place? According to New York Magazine, L’Oreal’s gray hair remedy’s patent is pretty straightforward and protects the pill’s unique formula, which is ultimately just: “Administration of agents mimicking dopachrome tautomerase (TRP-2) activity for protecting hair follicle melanocytes.” If you understand what that means, why are you reading this article and not curing something like a deadly disease or at least herpes? But if you had no idea what those “science speak” words were either, just know it’s L’Oreal’s way of saying, “It works.”
Company spokeswoman Suzie Davidowitz was quoted in USA Today as saying, “Although we have chosen not to unveil any further information, we can affirm that this discovery underscores the importance L’Oreal places in its advanced research.”
The secrecy just makes us all the more suspenseful. Perhaps we should dye our hair gray while it’s still crazy hip then?
