The new Reds Midtown Tavern seems to have everyone buzzing, but not necessarily for the reasons you might think! Why in heavens name is it called Reds Midtown Tavern when it is clearly not in Midtown? Well last week I was privy to a tour and tasting of the new restaurant at Yonge and College where I discovered why this name sparked such debate on the street.
Obviously this was a question asked by many sitting at a stunner of a table in the shape of a horseshoe. Answer? Their version of “midtown” is not north/south but rather east/west. Their explanation is that if you want to meet up with a friend who lives in Leslieville while you live in Liberty Village, this new Reds location would be considered midtown. I guess this makes sense? Well maybe not to all, but to the new Reds Midtown Tavern, it does and I will add that they certainly know how to wow their patrons. This very well located restaurant is beautifully decorated with old wood tables (some inherited from the famed McGill University), cosy leather chairs and gives off a very farmhouse yet homely feeling.

As you walk in the front door you are greeted by a glass wine cellar that definitely entices to get your wine on. Eclectic light fixtures capture your attention; some made of upside down wine glasses and others that look like 1920’s crystal chandeliers. The room is warm and it makes you want to eat, drink and chill there for a few hours. Which is exactly what we did.
The menu is large, filled with classics that have been given a modern twist. With socializing in mind, there is a nice selection of shareables including a potato flatbread that packs a ton of flavour and mini cheeseburger sliders perfect to satisfy a comfort food craving. Their main dishes aka “tavern” dishes include a delightfully prepared salmon over a sweet pea puree, the classic roasted chicken and fan favourite, steak frites. We came away with great flavour and couldn’t forget the excellent quality meats – the beef tenderloin literally melts in your mouth.
So, if you ever want to meet up with a friend who lives on the opposite of town, Reds “Midtown” Tavern is your spot! Tell them we sent you 😉
