Sex & The 6ix is our new weekly Sunday dating column in collaboration with a dating expert and matchmaker. Every week watch two people get to know each other and predict if the relationship will bloom or if it looks like an epic fail. This week’s column observes Jackie with Mike a couple that Canadian dating expert Jen Kirsch feels could possibly have a love connection. Here’s a look into their first date…
Meet the Daters
Why Jen Set These Two Up…
They say the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else, and I’m a firm believer of that, mind the pun. When readers reach out to me and indicate on their application that they have gone through a breakup within the past year, I know that – even if they’re looking for something serious – their head isn’t in the right mind space. Practice makes perfect when finding a match. The first handful of dates after a breakup can be awkward, or worse the two people on the date can be comparing them to their ex. This is why I decided to pair up Jackie and Mike.
Right off the bat they struck me as a good match for a date, not necessarily because I see this going anywhere (Jackie described herself as quirky and a bit awkward), but more so so that she can get experience getting back into the swing of things. Mike has been on a handful of dates, is charming, outgoing and great at making conversation. He seems like a good sport who’s up for a good time with the hope that eventually he’ll find a match. With his personality and her needs, I thought they’d be a great match.
With the fun, playful vibe of Fonda Lola, this can put them at ease. With this setting and this potentional partnership, I think Mike can help bring her out of her shell. That, or they can order more drinks to do that on our tab! 😉
Jackie said she’s most attracted to someone who is charming, a clean-cut boy next door who is an entrepreneur. Mike not only works for the Jay’s but he is also a real estate agent. They both enjoy drinking socially, and Jackie admits she’s moved on from the bar scene—something that can tame Mike down a bit.
I think they’ll get great conversation out of this, and a good experience that can help them determine more so what they’re looking for (and what they’re not) in the future when they’re both in a place to get more serious.
Soooo… on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago, our two blind daters went to have a delicious Mexican fiesta at Fonda Lola on Queen West.
We had to ask the owner of Fonda Lola how the date looked like it went from afar…. he said, “they had fun but I highly doubt there was a connection there…”
Hmmmmm…..
Let’s see if he’s right… Jen sat down with them and asked them the exact questions…
After interviewing both Jackie and Mike, Jen’s expert opinion was…
The worst thing about setting two people up on a blind date is then hearing two completely contrasting stories about what went down. But these two seem to have felt the same way about each other and left with the same feeling. Though there wasn’t a romantic connection, they both connected and enjoyed each other for the time they spent together. Their date was over 4 hours, when it could’ve ended after just one drink, so I’m happy they enjoyed each others company.
My expectation was that it would be a fun experience for both of them and loosen them up to being more open to dating other people. Based on the rapid-fire Q & A I gave them, I don’t expect them to see each other again, though if they run into each other I’m sure they’d be cordial and maybe even reference some inside jokes from their 4-hour date.

Special Note from Jen:
Hey you singles and you naughty, little voyeurs. Wanted to let you know that I’m passing the matchmaking torch on to Shanny from Shanny in the City. She’s a professional matchmaker and I expect her to work her magic in pairing off Toronto singles in an effective and promising way. Can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeves as she takes over for me at #SexAndThe6ix.
As for me, I’m not going far and hope you follow me along in my journey. I’ll be putting my focus into my site and a new weekly dating series on The Todd Shapiro show on SiriusXM channel 168.
Follow me to stay in the loop @jen_kirsch. Keep it classy, kids!
xo Jen
