Toronto-based designer Hilary MacMillan makes designs so sophisticated and glamourous that some of her perfectly tailored jackets and knee-length skirts feel like they could easily be in the costume departments of the likes of Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. Nevertheless, we’re happy they’re available right here in Canada where they’re designed, sourced and manufactured. We caught up with the Boston-born, Toronto-raised newcomer to find out more about her exciting career and what she’s currently obsessed with…
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I’m a womenswear designer in Toronto who also co-owns Elle Hardware, a jewelry and accessory boutique. Born in Boston. Raised in Toronto. Roots in Scotland. I love everything about being Canadian, American, and Scottish.
What are the biggest challenges and best rewards about what you do?
Biggest challenge is staying motivated. I work alone a lot and it’s easy to fall into a schedule that has no discipline. The best reward is seeing my designs on the runway and in editorials.
What are three things you can’t live without?
My family, iPhone, and sewing machine.
Finish this sentence: I love Toronto because…
…it means a little something different to everyone.
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
I change my mind weekly but I currently love Home of the Brave and their Tater Tots.
What’s one of your favourite go-to designers/brands or accessory lines and why do you sport their fashions?
I love so many designers but if I had to choose one designer I always flock to it’d be Rag & Bone. They just make clothes I want to wear everyday.
What products are always in your beauty/grooming bag?
I absolutely love Benefit products, and can’t live without my Stay Don’t Stray primer. I also religiously use my Dolce & Gabbana L’imperatrice fragrance.
What style trends are you obsessed with right now?
Plaid. Plaid. Plaid.
What’s your favourite spa or service?
Stillwater hands down is my favourite spa in the city; no one can beat their massages.
Let’s get social for a mo’. How can people stay up-to-date with your busy life?
I’m all over social media, you can catch me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and my website hilarymacmillan.com.
