Sure, her supermodel bone structure doesn’t hurt, but Irina Lytchak catches our eye when we see her about town in part because of the cool jewelry she always seems to have on. As the Managing Editor of Canadian Jeweller Magazine, she’s got her (ring) finger on the pulse when it comes to the latest trends in everything from watch straps to statement earrings. Considering that she also runs a cake decorating business on the side with her mom, Lytchak clearly has a refined appreciation for all things delicate and detailed. We caught up with the journalist and cake decorator extraordinaire to find out more about her life, favourite things, and what she loves most about calling Toronto home…
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I’ve lived in Toronto since I was 7 years-old. Having watched my parents move us to Canada from Ukraine, I’ve grown up with the mentality that hard work and dedication persevere, which is something I try to apply to every aspect of my life.
After finishing Centennial College’s journalism program, I went on to do a string of internships in everything from publishing to broadcast to digital. I finally landed my first gig at Rive Gauche Media about three years ago, where I worked my way up from Editorial Intern to Managing Editor of Canadian Jeweller Magazine. I have always dreamed of working as a journalist but I had no idea I’d be specializing in the jewellery and watch industries. It’s been a challenging but extremely rewarding ride so far and I can’t wait to take on whatever the future has planned for me.
PS I also run a small cake decorating business out of my kitchen with my mom. It was a hobby that turned into something more for the both of us.
What are three things you can’t live without?
Family, friends and love.
Finish this sentence: I love Toronto because…
…I could never get bored here. There is always so much to do, taste, see, explore, and enjoy. After living here for almost two decades, I thought I’ve seen everything but I was so wrong. I love exploring the city’s streets and finding spots I’ve never been to before.
I also love the fact that Toronto adapts to whatever season we’re in. In the summertime, it’s easy to beat the heat with a refreshing drink on a patio and when the weather gets cold, you can always find the yummiest comfort food to complement the winter chill.
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
I love 7 West. Yes, it’s very conveniently located right by my office, but it’s also got an amazing atmosphere that I adore. Oh, and did I mention that the service is always great and the food is amazing? And it’s open 24/7, 365 days of the year.
What’s one of your favourite go-to designers/brands or accessories lines and why do you sport their fashions?
For clothing, I always turn to Joe Fresh, Jacob and H&M. I find their fashions to be affordable and they’re constantly bringing in new stock to keep up with the latest trends. They work with my wardrobe, whether I’m looking for work attire, something casual, or even dressy. For bags, I aways rely on Roots because of their outstanding quality. And as far as jewellery goes, I love watches. My favourite is one I wear on a daily basis from Marc Coblen by TW Steel and a new one I recently got from Caravelle New York by Bulova, which is super sparkly and festive.
What products are always in your beauty/grooming bag?
MAC Studio Fix Powder, Maybelline Great Lash Mascara and L’Oreal Carbon Black Lineur Intense Liquid Eyeliner. I also moisturize like crazy, especially in the winter, with natural products like Pure+Simple Skin Softening Moisture Lotion and Green Beaver Boreal Face Cream.
Let’s get social for a mo’. How can people stay up-to-date with your busy life?
Facebook, Twitter and my blog.
