Jennifer Winsor is the reason we’re aware of so many awesome Canadian artists who are heating up the contemporary art scene. As the founder of Winsor Gallery, she has been bringing some of the most unique and talented emerging artists into her Vancouver gallery for over a decade. We caught up with Winsor to find out more about her life in the arts and her current obsessions…
Give us a snippet about you. What should people know?
I am very much a glass-half-full person. I love ideas and creativity and different types of knowledge, stimulation, conversation and art, of course. I also like to drive very fast with rock/alternative music playing loudly.

Finish this sentence: I love Vancouver because…
…it is gobsmackingly gorgeous. Vancouver is filled with interesting, genuine people, surrounded by majestic mountains and the open sea, has incredible wildlife, and above everything else, it has a long luscious spring. Also, I love to surf, and Tofino is only a beautiful, scenic, winding mountain drive away… did I mention that I love to drive?
What are three things you simply cannot live without?
Beyond art… movies are my escape, and quite frankly I would almost always rather be at a cinema with 3D glasses, popcorn, friends and family, and a great film. Cannot do without my creature comforts: good wine and food, and friends, dogs under the table… and my girls. I have two lovely, wonderful, rambunctious children and we have a great connection. My perfect Saturday would contain all three!
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
That is an incredibly difficult question to answer… Fairmount Bagel in Montreal (best bagels, at 4am), The Cliff in Barbados (gorgeous location, amazing prawns in pernod), Sobo in Tofino (two words: polenta fries), and the recently-discovered Nica Antica Pizzeria in Vancouver (sublime toppings, wafer-thin crust). That is my answer today, destined to change overnight.
What’s your favourite drink/cocktail and where do you go to get it?
His name is David, and he is a wondrous mixologist at West Restaurant in Vancouver. I asked him to surprise me with a drink that contained champagne, but was not sweet – he produced his special West 75 (champagne, calvados, Bombay Sapphire, Ricard pastis, lemon and sugar) and the rest is history. I also adore Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. And Corona.
