Sure, all of our mothers let us brush and style their hair when we were kids, but hairstylist and makeup artist Sarah Amson was giving her mother full-fledged makeovers complete with perms and colouring treatments by the sixth grade. Her career practically carved itself out for her, to say the least. Currently a makeup artist at Shagg Salon in Toronto, and represented by talent agency PM1, Amson started September with a bang by prepping celebs for red carpets at the exclusive celebrity lounge, The Stylist Suite. Enjoying the post-TIFF break from madness – before holiday parties and spring/summer photo shoots kick the beauty industry back into high gear – Amson took time out to tell us all about her beautiful life, the best beauty tips, and her favourite products…
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I have been doing hair and makeup since I can remember. I started by cutting, colouring, and even perming my mom’s hair when I was in the sixth grade. I was always digging through my friends’ makeup and giving makeovers to anyone who would let me. I feel so blessed to be able to do what I love, surrounded by the people I love, every day.
You just finished prepping stars for TIFF 2014. What are a few pieces of red carpet beauty advice that everyone should follow?
Make sure to wear the right undergarments. They keep everything in its right place. No visible panty line (a.k.a. VPL), no back boobs, and no wardrobe malfunctions, please. Keep it right, keep it tight, ladies!
As a member of the beauty/fashion industry, what’s one of your favourite pieces of beauty advice?
I make sure to always wash my face before bed, no matter how exhausted I am. And sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! Face, neck, chest, and hands. Always.
What Hollywood stars do you think have the best style and why?
Tilda Swinton is always amazing. She’s just badass. And Cate Blanchett – stunning, pure elegance.
What products are always in your beauty bag?
I have an arsenal of lipsticks on me at all times. As my mood changes throughout the day, so do my lips.
