You have to be a pretty incredibly awesome hairstylist to be working your magic backstage as Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Lady Gaga and Drake and the countless other superstars get ready for the MTV Awards. All you need to do is peruse hair stylist extraordinaire Sean Godard’s Instagram to see that he’s got the kind of top-notch skills and creative vision to make even the biggest diva in showbiz trust him with her hair. As an International Performing Artist for Redken 5th Avenue NYC and the Artistic Director at Toronto’s Salon Tocci, Godard splits his time between Toronto and New York when he’s not traveling around the world in the name of good hair. Thinking of doing something drastic for 2014? You need to meet Godard. Fortunately, we already got the conversation started for you…
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
My name is Sean Godard. I am a hairstylist from Halifax, Nova Scotia and am currently based out of Toronto and NYC. I am on the international artistic team for Redken, so I travel the world teaching seminars and doing main stage shows. When in Toronto, I work out of Salon Tocci in Liberty Village. I also do freelance session work whenever I have the time. I am obsessed with all things hair and fashion.
You’ve done the hair of some of the most famous people on the planet. Can you tell us a little bit about some of the biggest names you’ve had the chance to style and where?
I’m still riding high from working backstage at the MTV Awards in Brooklyn this summer. We worked with Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Lady Gaga and Drake to name a few. Being in an environment around all these pop stars was really one of those “pinch me” moments. I can recall watching the MTV Awards every year as I was growing up, so to actually be there backstage in the middle of it was totally a dream come true. It was so inspiring to see how professional everyone was and there was an amazing energy the entire time.
What trends in hair are you currently obsessed with?
I love that we have finally embraced a new way of way of colouring hair. It’s much more organic and natural looking then the “foiled” look of yesterday full. This can be a challenge for a lot of stylists because they can become so set in the way they are currently doing things that they miss where the trends are going. As far as style goes, I am obsessed with natural undone textures that look effortless and undone but with purpose. For shapes, I think it’s so great to see a return to shorter stronger shapes. For so long it was all about red carpet waves and extensions, so it’s refreshing to see women feel strong with shorter hair.
What are some of your favourite hairstyling products and why?
I personally swear by Redken. It’s not only because I work with them; I choose to work with them because of what they have to offer. I love that every product just does what it says it will do and they are always tried, tested and true. It comes in at a great price point compared to other professional brands but it delivers more results than products that cost double the price.
Some of our must haves include Powder Grip, which is a dry texturizing/volumizing powder. Full Frame is the best mousse I have ever worked with for amazing volume and texture. Wax Blast is an amazing spray wax with a satin finish to give hair an undone finish. Our new favourite is Fashion Waves, which is Redken’s first beach spray texturizing product to get today’s undone beach texture.
