We know it’s early but we’re already admittedly getting into the Christmas spirit with a stream of seasonally-themed theatre and musical performances recently announced. We’ve got the lowdown on just which tickets you need to score to ensure you’re in the holiday groove!
Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir
The Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir (GNVGC) is back to present Making Spirits Bright, with three performances set to take place on December 12, 13 (7:30pm at Christ Church Cathedral), and 14 (3pm at Fraserview MB Church in Richmond). Get into the Christmas concert mood courtesy of the 90 voices behind Vancouver’s foremost gospel choir as they perform all the classic yuletide carols with signature high-energy, heart, and soul. Tickets are $25.00 and will sell out, so don’t wait.
A Twisted Christmas Carol is a fresh and fun take on an anti-holiday classic. The perfect combination of improv and Christmas concert entertainment all rolled-up into one. Using audience suggestions and Dickens’s holiday classic, a group of talented, nutty, and inspired actors will improvise their hearts out to create a new comedy every night. You’ll never look at Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the rest of the A Christmas Carol characters in the same way again. Shows are on now until December 27 and tickets can be purchased here.
J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio
Get into the spirit of the season and catch the Vancouver performance of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC. Taking place for one night only, the December 21 concert showcases Bach’s work originally performed more than 280 years ago to mark the six feast days of the 1734/35 Christmas season. Don’t wait to get tickets – this performance will sell out in advance. For more details and to purchase tickets, click here.
Though not totally “Christmas,” but definitely full of spirit (not to mention a classic story), The Arts Club has just launched its newest holiday-time production: Mary Poppins (starting December 5 through January 4). Get swept up into the adventure, as Mary Poppins flies over the rooftops of London this holiday season and indulge your inner kid. This family musical based on the writings of P.L. Travers, and the popular Disney film, features the unforgettable songs “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” plus some catchy new ones.
Finally, don’t miss one of two opportunities to revisit a Christmas concert classic: The Nutcracker. Both the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and the Centre In Vancouver for The Performing Arts are set to open two unique shows depicting this timeless and enchanting tale. The Centre presents the festive masterpiece in conjunction with The Goh Ballet, while Queen Elizabeth Theatre will see the Royal Winnipeg Ballet perform to Tchaikovsky’s brilliant score. Tickets are coveted for this holiday must-see, so don’t wait. Find tickets to the QE Theatre here, and The Centre here.
