We absolutely adore modern art and wish that we could cover our walls with exquisite canvases. Sadly, it’s just not in our budget. When we learned that the street fashion accessories brand Komono had collaborated with the estate of one of our fave artists, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and were launching an exclusive capsule collection of watches, we were over the moon. It was our chance to own and wear a piece of art history significance – at an affordable price to boot.
Born in 1960, Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the most illustrious artists of his generation and is widely considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His incredible works are edgy and raw, and through a bold sense of colour and composition he maintains a fine balance between seemingly contradictory forces such as control and spontaneity, menace and wit, urban imagery and primitivism. We just love his work.
Inspired by Basquiat’s blatant disregard for the traditional boundaries between artistic mediums, this collection of wrist candy spans the gap between accessories and high art. Each of the six timepieces boasts a unique printed fabric wristband depicting a different detail of one of these famous Basquiat paintings: Pegasus (1987); Tenor (1985); Philistines (1982); Museum Security (1983); Return of the Central Figure (1983); and Untitled (1984). We like the fact that no two watches are the same.
This is a limited-edition collection so don’t dawdle in picking up your own piece of Basquiat memorabilia.
The Komono x Jean-Michel Basquiat collection is available exclusively at Still Life in Vancouver. Each watch is available in three different sizes: The Wizard for $95; The Winston for $105; and The Magnus for $120.
