It’s not every day you’re propelled into a world where food takes you on an exciting journey from the icy Alberta plains to the wild West Coast rainforests. Salt, Fresh & Field invites us on an eye-opening expedition of food culture from the locals’ perspectives, not missing a beat. We were thrilled to attend the launch of this series last week, surrounded by a packed, buzzing crowd of supporters at Gastown’s Rainier Provisions. As we peered over bobbing heads to the screening wall, nibbling on scrumptious local cheeses and cured meats, we were immediately enthralled by the rarity of this new foodie documentary series…
We follow host Chad Brealey as he meets passionate, hard-working community members from across Western Canada, introducing him (and the viewer) to some of the most amazing backyard food sources, their process of essentially hunting and gathering these meals and the beautiful presentation of their efforts as we journey back to the table. All the while, we are consumed by the fascinating storytelling, the ease of Chad’s laidback West Coast energy and stunning soundtrack that pulls it all together, showcasing amazing local musicians from the featured communities.
The title of this unique food series, Salt, Fresh & Field, is woven seamlessly throughout the first season, as an eager Chad explores ‘Salt’ with his ocean expedition of the prized Sea Urchin in the Pacific Northwest, then travels to Northern Alberta to seek ‘Fresh’ in the form of ice fishing, followed by Chad exploring the ‘Field’ as he hunts for venison outside of Oliver, BC. It’s captivating to watch Chad brave new experiences and eagerly anticipate the outcome of his efforts as he teams up with chefs, farmers, hunters and fishermen for an inspiring food journey.
An ode to sustainable food practices and the preservation of the wildlife that surrounds us, the series was launched with support from TELUS Optik™ Local’s Community Access Grant Program. Featuring episodes that are just over 20 minutes in length, the first season of Salt, Fresh & Field premieres on TELUS Optik TV on Demand on May 31st.
