It’s hard to unfold the newspaper (or visit the Huffington Post homepage, let’s be real) without falling into a bottomless pit of despair over what we’re doing to the planet. From the rainforests to the oil sands to the ice caps, we’ve really dropped the ball on this one. One area that we’re really f*cking up royally is the oceans. We pollute, we plunder, and we over-fish like cray cray. So what room does that leave for an eco-conscious Torontonian who happens to love sushi? Is there no hope?
Enter: Just Sushi. Just Sushi brings Toronto the world’s first and only restaurant with an entirely Ocean Wise designated menu. FYI, Ocean Wise is the Vancouver Aquarium’s conservation program, helping to make it easier for consumers to know which products are sustainable and committed to fighting over-fishing through their labeling system. Basically, anything with the Ocean Wise seal of approval isn’t actively wrecking the planet. Pretty great, right?

Just Sushi not only has an entirely sustainable sushi menu but also sources the majority of their non-aquatic ingredients from local and organic producers. This green philosophy extends to their facility and business practices as well. Located in the increasingly trendy and condo-filled Humber Bay Shore area, the restaurant has interior walls made of 120-year-old reclaimed wood along with a giant 250 square foot “living wall” (a self-sustaining vertical wall garden) that helps purify the air. It’s also just really frickin’ awesome. Don’t feel bad about getting delivery either, all their to-go packages are compostable and they bring it to you on electric scooters.
The restaurant is the brainchild of Evan Clifford, Ian Clifford, and Gabrielle Charlebois, with Head Chef Eko Prasetyo. They noticed a lacking of food choices in the Humber Bay Shore area and wanted also to bring “room service” style delivery. When they decided on sushi and realized they wanted to go sustainable, they discovered Ocean Wise and knew it had to be all or nothing. The rest, they say, was fishtory. Yes, you did just read that and no apologies will be made. Embarrassing puns aside, Just Sushi brings a truly sustainable vibe to the Toronto food scene and we think, fellow eco-warrior Torontonians, this is something we should all be proud of.
