Pride Week here in Toronto is upon us, and we’ve already started wearing dramatic eyeshadows and our boldest shades of lipstick and nail polish in anticipation. To get ourselves even more in the spirit of celebrating, we took a look at some of RuPaul’s best ever beauty advice. Of course, we interpreted her quotes in our own way, just for you. Here are the best pieces of beauty advice we’ve learned from RuPaul over the years.
The RuPaul Quote: “We’re born naked, and the rest is drag.”
Our interpretation – Don’t take yourself, or your makeup, too seriously: Feel like wearing glitter all over your eyelids? Do it. At the end of the day, whether you put on two coats of mascara or full face paint, we’re all playing dress-up. Makeup, first and foremost, should be fun. Experiment with it. Give yourself a totally different look just for a day. Makeup can enhance your beauty and cover up flaws, but at its best, it can make you feel like Kylie Minogue for a hot minute.
The RuPaul Quote: “Look at me – a big old black man under all of this makeup, and if I can look beautiful, so can you.”
Our interpretation – Makeup can make everyone look more fabulous… everyone: There’s no excuse for turning your nose up at a set of false lashes or insisting that bright red lips make you look clownish. If you’re afraid to experiment with makeup, just make an appointment at your favourite brand’s department store counter and have a makeup artist walk you through what colours suit you and how to apply each product. These kind of makeovers are generally free of charge, provided you buy some of the recommended products. Sometimes all we need is a little professional help.
The RuPaul Quote: “Walking with your chest out and your head held high says you have earned the right to stomp and pummel this particular piece of real estate.”
Our interpretation – Confidence is everything: Have you ever noticed that when someone believes he or she is truly beautiful, then that person comes across as more attractive to everyone else? If you hunch your shoulders over and act ashamed of who you are, you’re going to throw some negative vibes around the room. Pull your posture together and show off the real you. Even if you don’t believe you’re beautiful, we challenge you to act like you’re in Gisele Bundchen’s body for just one afternoon. Giving off a sense that you think you’re pretty damn swell makes other people believe it, too.
The RuPaul Quote: “When the going gets tough, the tough reinvent.”
Our interpretation – Always be open to a makeover: Sometimes changing your sense of self-worth really is as simple as changing the colour of your hair. It’s as simple as that.
The RuPaul Quote: “I’m six foot four – hello. And with hair, heels, and attitude… I’m through the mother-freakin’ roof!”
Our interpretation – Go big or go home: Why try to downplay your most prominent features when you can up-play them? If you’re already super tall, get out the hairspray and get more height, girl. If you’ve got a long nose, pull your hair back in a dramatic bun and show it off. What makes us stand out from the pack is worth celebrating. Happy Pride Week, everyone!
