A Canadiana Review at Trappers Restaurant

A couple of days before Christmas, Andrew Dobson and I had some catching up to do so we decided to check out the staple Canadiana restaurant, Trappers on Yonge Street North. It was one of those rainy, snowy, slushy nights and comfort food was exactly what we craved. Little did we know owner and chef Vishal Ramsuchit would present us with several dishes so we could taste his menu properly. Lucky us! Not so much for our waistlines… We sampled the menu trying two appetizers, one pasta, followed by four main courses – yes, you read correctly – four! Let’s just say we rolled out of there…

The food was very good with traditional French and Canadian culinary flavours. The menu is so large there is honestly something for everyone. The appetizers were surprising – in my opinion being smaller versions of main courses. That said, the flavors were excellent and I loved both. We started with a prosciutto wrapped lamb loin over a truffle mushroom risotto – this was delicious and probably my favourite of all we tasted that evening. I rarely see lamb loin on Toronto menus anymore so it was a nice treat. The second appetizer was a grilled prawn and sea scallop over a pineapple and mango risotto – so yummy.

The rest of the meal was also very good, as we tasted everything from grilled jumbo prawns, wild boar pasta, pork tenderloin, duck, filet mignon and more. Yes – it was a proper feast! So while I will admit that I would’ve liked a little more innovation in flavour and plating, I will point out that these traditional dishes were created using an outstanding quality of ingredients and made with love and proper culinary technique. They also use a charcoal grill for many of their grilled meats and seafood, therefore adding a delicious outdoorsy taste to all the dishes. Ramsuchit prides himself in only serving the best and it shows.
