For half a century adidas Originals best-selling sneaker, the iconic Stan Smith, has remained virtually unchanged. The instantly recognizable silhouette and timeless design have allowed the shoe to stay popular since its design in the 70s. In January 2021, adidas announced the brand’s journey to End Plastic Waste with the goal of using only recycled materials by 2025. In celebration of the new sustainable era, adidas Originals has introduced 3 new iterations of the iconic sneaker with the launch of the Stan Smith, Forever collection.

Marking the brand’s new ethical era, adidas Originals has committed its most successful sneaker to a sustainable makeover. All 3 versions of the shoe contain uppers made of PRIMEGREEN, a high-performance recycled material, that sit atop a white recycled outsole. The first design stays the truest to the Stan Smith original form; clean white with the classic green accents. The women’s version of this shoe leans more towards the environmentalist vibes of the launch, with Earth-inspired graphics, a white heel tab and an ivory tongue graphic. The other sneaker in this drop features embossed, colourful graphics, gold eyelets and the Stan Smith’s signature green heel tabs.

Completing the Stan Smith, Forever trifecta is another eco-friendly shoe with a twist on the classic design. The white recycled PRIMEGREEN upper is complemented by the Stan Smith’s iconic green heel tab on top of the white recycled rubber outsole. The classic look is then updated with the addition of Mother Nature-approved embroidery throughout.
The original blue box that each pair of shoes comes in has also gotten an upgrade for the eco-friendly finishing touch. Each box has been revamped to now be composed of 90% recycled paper. It’s the necessary step forward for sustainable fashion, and we hope more brands will follow in adidas’ footsteps soon!
