As anyone who has ever woken up with the quintessential raccoon/Kim Kardashian crying mascara look can attest to, makeup removal is an important part of the beauty process. In fact, I make it my nighttime commandment to never go to bed without cleansing my pores of product, lest I suffer the consequences the next day.
Though the media would have us believe otherwise, it is highly unlikely to wake up with freshly formed curls and a face full of airbrushed sunshine. Sorry Beyonce, but not too many people actually “woke up like dis.” Even though waking up like Queen Bey is not an option for 99.9 per cent of the population, you can still wake up relatively flawless with the help of these three makeup removers…
The Classic: Ponds Cold Cream | $4.97
I first encountered this product rooting around in my mother’s makeup drawer as a wee lass. Needless to say, this classic cream has stood the test of time as far as effectiveness is concerned. There’s something about the sight of the signature round container on the dresser that makes me feel at ease; knowing that soon all my makeup-laden cares will be moisturized away.
On the Go: Neutrogena Hydrating Makeup Remover Wipes | $9.97
There is a bit of a heated debate (not all that heated, but I digress) between those who love removal wipes and those who prefer the standalone liquid. As with most things it comes down to personal preference. Although I won’t take sides, wet wipes are extremely handy in a pinch as they’re portable and easily disposable. These particular wipes are great because they’re moisturizing, meaning your skin won’t feel like it’s been attacked by sandpaper after each use.
The Splurge: Clinique Take the Day Off To Go | $11
While wipes are great for a quick fix, certain makeup looks call for something a bit more substantial in the removal department. The rule of thumb is: If your makeup took some time to put on, it likely won’t come off without a fight. When you’re in this situation, regular ol’ wipes just won’t do. Clinique’s liquid formula works on waterproof mascara, the sweet comforting words every eye makeup wearer needs to hear. While many of Clinique’s well-lauded makeup remover products reside above the $20 mark, this ‘to go’ version slides in well under, making it a makeup bag must-have.
