There was already a line about 15 people long when we made our way to Belly Buster Submarines‘ new location on King Street just east of Spadina this past week. Lining one wall of the sandwich shop: Polaroids of Belly Buster devotees who’ve already purchased 13 subs at the new location. Seriously?! It just opened! So why did it take 39 years for the famous sub shop, whose first locale is at Yonge and Glen Echo, to open up a second location in the downtown area?
“He said he needed a young guy like me to make it happen,” said co-owner Jian Magen on the King Street patio of Belly Busters. The “he” Magen is talking about is Belly Buster founder Chris Passilidis, the man who made the subs of Magen’s childhood in North Toronto, which he and his twin brother Page used to get on the regular.
The Magen twins, along with their friend, Michael Kimel, finally got one of their childhood dreams off the ground when Passilidis accepted their offer to expand his beloved sub shop. The next generation of Belly Buster owners, along with Passilidis, have plans of expanding to even more locations but, until then, we’re happy to know that we’ve got a Belly Buster in walking distance of our office. We recommend the Belly Buster Bacon Combo, which is just $7.65 for a 12″ and is generous enough for two hungry View The Vibe staffers to share. The bread is insanely fresh, and we loaded it up with special Belly Buster sauce, especially since Magen refused to tell us what it’s made of.
“That’s a secret I can’t even talk about,” he said with a smile. It’s definitely a secret we’ll be back to indulge in very soon.
