Craft beer festivals are the new black. You heard it here first. As our city eschews the big boys for the ever-growing crop of li’l fellas, we’re constantly called to congregate for the sake of sipping the new sippables. I won’t complain. Any excuse to spend a Sunday afternoon under the sun’s rays while sipping away at brew after brew of artisanal greatness in the name of “information gathering” is worthwhile to me. So it was with… er… 411-heavy ideals that Ms. Millar and I headed to the Roundhouse Craft Beer Festival to indulge, or rather, expose ourselves to some of the great craft breweries’ beers we’d yet to try. Here were a few that stood out…
Flying Monkeys City and Colour Imperial Maple Wheat
A collaboration between Flying Monkeys and Dallas Green, this beer wasn’t just maple-tinged, it was a maple slap in the face. I don’t mind a sap-fuelled backhand across the cheek every now and again, so long as it leaves me wanting more. We dipped some of the coconut oil fried donuts from the stand next to the winged primates into this brew and experienced the new milk and cookies for the 21st century.
Neustadt Raspberry Sour Krout
Refreshing, crisp, and just fruity enough to lull us into believing summer would never end, but not fruity enough to confuse us of our sexuality. The way any good fruit flavoured beer should be.
Nickel Brook Naughty Neighbour
Alright… so this one was good. Didn’t blow our minds or anything. But we remember it simply due to the fact that Jessica Rabbit’s homely sister is the brew’s mascot.
Left Field’s EEPHUS
We’re all kids at heart, so do as we did and say “EEPHUS!” 15 times really fast. You’ll giggle, then remember that you’re of legal drinking age. The name intrigued us enough to order up a sampling of this oatmeal brown ale. Left Field’s branding intrigued Sam enough to pretend she adores baseball…
Black Oak Saison
Sugar and spice and all things nice. A slightly sweet summery brew with a nice carbonation, Black Oak’s Saison was the perfect palate cleanser between bites of The Food Dudes’ pulled pork sammie and fish tacos.
