So, in case you haven’t noticed, the VTV team likes to drink…a lot. I wouldn’t really consider us lushes…but that’s likely due to the fact I’m a proud ‘functioning alcoholic’. And while we – or at least Sam and I – are big proponents of the ‘Hair of the Dog’ theory, nothing goes better with a day-after pint (or Caesar in Sam’s case, #nasty) than some down-home brunch. So, I figured since I haven’t been out to a new spot in the last week or so, I’d bring you some of my favourite Hangover Brunch restos…
House on Parliament – 454 Parliament Street
Crass servers, pints aplenty, and dense French toast abound at the good ol’ HOP. It’s a semi-Brit styled neighbourhood restopub that has cheap eats and a more-than-decent bar selection. Order a Caesar, the Beau’s Breakfast, and dig in with one hand holding up your heavy head.
Lola’s Kitchen (formerly Lola’s Commissary) – 634 Church Street
So this might not be the absolute best spot if you’re looking for a more greasy spoon style brunch. However(!), Lola’s Kitchen serves some amazing breakfast fare, most of which has organic or local ingredients. My favourite is, not surprisingly, the decadent stuffed French toast with lemon cheesecake sandwiched in cinnamon-spiced Challah bread…drool. PS Order the Lola’s potatoes with a side of roasted garlic aioli.
Factory Girl – 193 Danforth Avenue
They’ve got Guinness on tap. A frittata with prosciutto and brie. And exposed brick walls. (Sorry, I still love ’em.) It’s got a great vibe and friendly service, which I actually see as a disservice when I’m all ‘tired eyes’ and short-fused…which is pretty much always. But I say stop in anyhow.
Maggie’s Eatery – 20 Charles Street East
Okay…I effing love this place. I hate having to wait 20 or so minutes for a table, sure, but when you’ve been out the night before, possibly dancing and thus famished the next morning, Maggie’s portion sizes are like a gift from the heavens. You can’t get any Hair of the Dog here, but their freshly squeezed juices are a worthwhile substitute. I get the Boss…for obvious reasons…
Insomnia – 563 Bloor Street West
Insomnia is one of those restaurants that has tons of regulars who will preach its virtues any day of the week. The brunch is solid – chocolate banana pancakes, hello! – and most choices are a swell pairing to the PB&J martini.
