Camping is one of the most popular ways to enjoy the outdoors, and for good reason. Whether it be for relaxation, connecting with nature, family-friendly fun, or just to pass the time, a whopping 77 million Americans go camping regularly each year.
However, camping trips can go wrong very quickly, especially if you don’t have the right gear. We all know about sleeping bags and camp chairs, but what are we forgetting? Let’s talk about the often-overlooked essentials to bring on your next camping trip!
1. Wood/Wood-Gathering Tools
Unless you plan on gathering sticks all night long, you’re going to need some good firewood before you can relax by the fire. Either bring enough firewood along with you or an ax/saw. You may also want a firewood carrier or something else to make your trips easier.
Remember, never bring firewood from out of state, which is illegal in many states across the US. They may contain harmful pests or diseases not native to that region, which could cause serious environmental damage.
2. Wet Wipes
Wet wipes are some of the most versatile items you can bring on a camping trip with you. They can help clean your body, your gear, and so much more.
Just be sure to get ones that are both disinfectant and safe to use on your skin. The more versatile, the better.
3. Bathroom Supplies
When you have to go, you have to go, even in the woods. Always ensure that you have toilet paper and anything else you’ll need for a comfortable experience.
Also, a portable toilet could make your trip a lot easier. Feel free to view this camping toilet seat for extra comfort if you’re camping outside of a campground!
4. Flashlight
Flashlights and extra batteries are essential for your trip. Always pack more than you think you need, just in case your batteries are old or they get wet.
5. Plenty of Water
If you calculate how much water you think you’ll need, bring an extra two gallons. Investing in a 5-gallon water cooler will only set you back $30 or so, and it could really save your trip.
The last thing you want is to worry about running out of water, or having to conserve it. You may need to clean yourself, do dishes, and still drink enough water throughout the day. If you’re hiking in the warmer months during your trip, then you’ll need at least a gallon each day for drinking.
6. Dish Soap
Doing dishes is essential on the camping trip. You don’t want to have a pile to forget about at home and then have to throw away your camping equipment. Bring a bar or small bottle of dish soap and more than enough water for dishes.
7. Camping Trip Itinerary
This includes a map and a plan, and you should provide a copy of this itinerary to someone at home in case of an unplanned incident. That way, someone will know where you were supposed to be, which could make it easier for a search party to find you.
