CBD Oil : Mood Disorders VS “ A Change In Mood”

Mood disorders are characterized as “elevations in a person’s temperament.” These can include diagnoses such as mania, hypomania, major depressive state, or depressive mood, while some conditions are known to cycle between diagnoses such as manic into depression which would be designated as “bipolar disorder.”

These types of disorders often bear symptoms inclusive of mood swings of an unpredictable nature going from a point of sheer despair to a level of utter euphoria.

Scientists are anxiously seeking suitable alternatives to the antipsychotics, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers that currently show as inefficient and produce undesirable side effects. An effective treatment is required due to the impact that these conditions have on the quality of these lives, not to mention the danger, with many suffering with suicidal ideation.

Many people, on their own, turn to everything CBD related for anti-depressive tendencies, anxiolytic properties, and mood stabilization. Although CBD has not been given approval by any regulatory agency as a treatment for mood disorders, more people find its effects more beneficial than other alternative medicine in the market.

CBD Oil As It Pertains To Mood Disorders – Scientifically Speaking

For anyone with severe mental health issues as described, it is first and foremost a requirement that you seek appropriate medical treatment from a Behavioral Health Specialist. Cannabidiol otherwise known as CBD is not a replacement for receiving a doctor’s care and should not be considered as such.

These products are merely an aid to assist with treatment with the potential to provide additional relief of symptoms relating to the diagnosed condition. Please ensure that you seek a doctor’s advice before beginning and regimen.

The components responsible for CBD oil’s therapeutic properties have not been established at this point, despite the expansive investigations. In one particular study, it was concluded that the compound’s purported anti-depressive and anxiolytic properties depend on neurotransmission (that is 5-HT1A mediated) throughout vital brain locations including the “medial prefrontal cortex” and “the stria terminalis – bed nucleus.”

Additional positive reactions seen with the substance like anti-compulsive ideation, elevation of extinction, and “facilitating neurogenesis of the hippocampus” can potentially be contributed to neurotransmission which is mediated through anandamide. Researchers are of the belief that cannabidiol may possibly activate the “TRPV1” pathways, in turn, providing the cannabinoid its antipsychotic properties.

CBD Oil A  Cohesive Addition  To Medically Prescribed Treatment

CBD oil will likely not be acting on its own as a sole regimen for a mood disorder. These are generally conditions treated by a Behavior Health Specialist and require a stringent medical treatment plan. In some cases, the antipsychotics or anti-depressive prove inefficient and, in a majority of cases, they bring undesirable adverse reactions. See here for guidance on cannabidiol as it relates to mental health.

What cannabidiol can do effectively is help with this symptomatology. There is research evidencing CBD’s potential to mitigate schizophrenic symptoms in an efficient capacity as compared to “over-the-counter options.” There are also reports showing individuals under the care of antipsychotics who had CBD added to their regimen, resulted in a decrease of side effects from the antipsychotic.

Side effects Reported With Cannabidiol

There is minimal documentation as to the adverse effects of “crude” CBD extract use as it pertains to various mood disorders, but subjects from these various studies that were conducted indicated side effects inclusive of :

  • Nausea
  • Sleepiness
  • Memory issues
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • And some with an increase in hunger

Final Thought

“Mood disorder” and “changes in mood” are translated in very different ways. Cannabidiol can alter mood. It’s not intoxicating, but it can help with reducing instances of stress or anxiety.

When it comes to treating a medically diagnosed mood disorder, it becomes a complement to the Behavioral Health Specialist’s plan of care, not something you should take solely on its own. In saying that, it assists in relieving the symptoms for the diagnosed condition as well as works to counteract the side effects created by the prescribed medications. If you feel that your mood is consistently affecting your quality of life and activities on a daily basis, it could potentially be more than merely an “off mood.” A consultation with a specialist is merely a conversation to discuss what’s been going on. Most people who take that step often find it worthwhile.
