The sticky, sweet smell of sunscreen evokes a flood of childhood memories – swimming in the lake until my skin shriveled like a prune; raspberry juice dripping down my chin in a farmer’s field; long days spent outside playing with my friends all summer long. Despite these fond associations, it’s not a scent I want marking my skin now that I’m a grownup, and the same goes for the cocktail of toxic chemicals that comes with it. But with fair skin and a growing collection of tattoos to protect, it seems like a necessary evil. So, when Consonant Skincare released The Perfect Sunscreen, I knew I had to see if it could live up to its name.
Like all of the products developed by Toronto-based Consonant Skincare, this sunscreen is completely natural. Interestingly, this actually makes it more effective than conventional products that penetrate the skin in order to block the sun’s rays and require 30 minutes to become effective. The Perfect Sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB as soon as you put it on, and the natural oils it’s made of left my skin silky smooth.
A touch of natural mica colours the sunscreen in order to even out your skin tone. Instead of being left with sticky white residue, your skin will look more flawless than ever. And there’s no need to worry about colour matching, the effect is subtle and blended easily on the diverse complexions of the friends I asked to test it out.
I feel like I should note for any other tattooed ladies out there that the pigment in the sunscreen did make my tattoos look slightly faded after application. However, the effect wasn’t drastic enough to be noticeable for anyone else but me.
Best of all, it is completely scent-free, so it’s safe for people with sensitivities and it won’t compete with your signature perfume. And after a few hours in the sun, there wasn’t a sign of redness in sight.
It took two years for Consonant Skincare to get the formula right, but its effectiveness, holistic ingredient list, and easy application outperforms any natural sunscreen I’ve tried thus far. While its $45 price tag might be tough to swallow, it’s a small price to pay for protecting your body’s largest (and most visible) organ. Tried and tested, I’d say Consonant got the name right. This is the perfect sunscreen.
