It’s no secret we have a massive respect for the Daily Bread Food Bank. The work they do is absolutely amazing, and anytime we can help bring some exposure to this fantastic cause we do so humbly. So the other week when Nicki was invited to cover the Daily Bread Food Bank’s Ultimate Food Challenge, I leapt at the chance to be her beard for the night.
The event was sort of like a mix between a UFC throwdown – without all the punches, of course – and Food Network’s Chopped…
The contenders? Chefs Rob Rossi (Bestellen), Nick auf der Mauer (Pochetta & Co.), and Steve Gonzalez (formerly of Origin).
The challenge? Create a superb bite of bliss using ingredients found in the Daily Bread’s food hampers. (The same hampers of goods given to families in need of support by the Daily Bread Food Bank.)
The judges? Jennifer Bain (Toronto Star Food Editor), Roberto Martella (Owner of Grano), Chef Bob Villeneuve (lead sponsor Campbell Canada’s Corporate Chef), and John Maxwell (Allen’s).
The battle dishes? Mac n’ cheese croquettes with a creamed corn cheese fondue by Rob Rossi; Steve Gonzalez’s mashed potato croquettes; and a fried chicken thigh and fried chicken skin sandwich courtesy Nick auf der Mauer.
The winner? You’ll have to watch the vlog to find out…
