We’ve got a question for you, Toronto: Does the phrase “Diner en Blanc” ring any bells? If the answer is yes, we’re actually pretty impressed. Having originated in Paris, Diner en Blanc is an ultra-secretive, invite-only, all-white flash-mob that meets spontaneously once every year for a massive outdoor dinner party. How massive, you ask? We’re talking sea-of-white massive, and this September 17th will mark the third consecutive incarnation for the international event in Toronto.
The all-white dinner party has evolved from humble beginnings in Paris to international iterations all over the world, including spots in Sydney, NYC, San Diego, Vancouver, and, of course, the TDot, to name a few. Let’s be honest here, too – you’ve got to hand it to the Parisians. Since the days of the Sun King they have long known how to throw some of the most extravagant parties in the world, and clearly they aren’t planning to stop now. A hundred bonus points for you, Paris. We like your style.
Oh, and if you hadn’t already guessed, attending an event this private is a bit tricky. Invitations to this thing are highly elusive. Obtainable only through a previous year’s guest, invitations are sent out secretly in three separate phases, with the final invites reaching guests’ fingertips only hours before the actual event starts. With a set-up like this one, Diner en Blanc sounds like one-part scavenger hunt, one-part backyard tea party, one-part Gatsby-style blowout. And we think that’s actually a pretty cool mix. With only seven days left until Toronto turns white, keep your eyes open for those invites – otherwise, you might just miss ’em!
