Lil BUB, Internet cat extraordinaire, has become instantly recognizable for her derpy-in-the-best-way-possible face, her instant “aww” factor, and her alleged origins in the depths of space. And now, her innumerable fans will have something else to celebrate: Lil BUB is putting out an album. Of music. We’ll just let that sink in for a second.
Science and Magic: A Soundtrack to the Universe is set to be released on December 4 through Joyful Noise Recordings, but is now available for pre-order on digital, CD, or LP for those diehard audiophiles loath to miss the sound of a soft purr.
This is not Lil BUB’s first foray into tuneage: earlier this year, she was featured on Run the Jewels’ charity album Meow the Jewels, and she previously starred in Andrew W.K.’s absurdly endearing music video “Star Party Animal.”
W.K, who released a surprisingly affecting statement, had this to say on the famous feline’s musical debut:
“First of all, it should be understood that this album is a genuine musical experience. Also, it should be understood that this is not a novelty item or a cheap and disillusioning gimmick. This is a bonafied and musically gratifying concept album, which entirely emerged from the soul and spirit of Lil BUB herself. How do I know this? Because BUB told me so.”
He adds: “The songs on this album are the soundtrack to BUB’s universal adventure, and a soundtrack to the universe itself. You’ll feel transported by the music’s stimulating spirit, and taken to places beyond your imagination’s limits, all the while experiencing the sonic aura of BUB’s loving and compassionate presence.”
From her humble beginnings in an Indiana tool shed, Lil BUB has had some challenges along the way—she’s a polydactyl ‘perma-kitten’ who will remain kitten-sized throughout her life, she suffers from dwarfism and is the only recorded cat in history to have osteopetrosis. Fortunately, she adopted Mike Bridavsky, a human up the task of raising such a unique, and uniquely loveable, cat. Bridavsky is collaborating on the new album along with ‘official bubbysitter’ Matt Tobey and studio drummer Ben Lumsdain.
She’s also one of the Internet busiest felines, with her very own advice column on Nylon, as well as a book, a movie, and even a talk show hosting gig under her belt.
One of the most heartwarming outcomes of Lil BUB’s story is the awareness she’s raised about special needs pets. In February 2014, she launched Lil BUB’s Big Fund in partnership with the ASPCA, to provide grants for shelters housing pets with special needs—she’s raised over $300,000 through various initiatives. 25% of sales from her new album will go towards helping special needs pets.
Started from the bottom now she’s here, obvs. Speaking of, we’re loving the idea of Lil BUB collaborating with Drake. Or the Weeknd (The Meowning?). Whatever the album turns out to be, it’s going to be epic—and we’re hoping it won’t sound like the eerie and unnerving but apparently “species-appropriate” cat music hypothesized by researchers earlier this year.
Godspeed, space cat.
