For most of us, the days of having to choose between ugly headgear and crooked teeth are long gone, and the reason for this is Invisalign. Invisalign is a modern solution that corrects crooked teeth without the use of wires or elastics. The solution has been praised by many, and in this article, we are going to examine everything you need to know about this fantastic solution.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is just a set of clear and durable plastic trays that are moulded into a set of aligners that snap into place over your teeth. The aligners slowly start to correct your teeth’s position within your mouth and every two weeks; you exchange your set for a new one. Over time, your teeth are fixed and straightened into their correct positions.

How do I use Invisalign?

Invisalign is an excellent option for those who are looking for a shorter term, and the less evasive opportunity to correct their teeth. For those who are starting treatment, you should be prepared to wear your Invisalign trays for 22 hours per day. The only time in which your aligners are off is when you are brushing your teeth or eating. Patients are encouraged to continue to practice proper dental hygiene including regular brushing and flossing to ensure their teeth remain healthy during the treatment. One thing to note is that if you are a heavy coffee drinker or smoker, your aligners will turn a pale yellow over time due to natural reactions with the plastic that is used. The average patient only needs Invisalign for 20 weeks, but naturally, treatments will depend on the individual patient.

The Pros

Invisalign is known to have three significant advantages over traditional braces. The first is that Invisalign is invisible, and will ensure that your co-workers and family do not see a face full of metal when you smile. For many of our potential clients this is an essential aspect of this solution, and with proper cleaning, your smile will only become more beautiful over time. Secondly, Invisalign is considered quite a bit more comfortable than traditional braces. This is due to Invisalign lacking the metal or elastics that can cause abrasions or soars in a patients mouth from conventional braces. Finally, Invisalign is removable, something which traditional braces are not. The solution is designed to be removed during eating and cleaning, and this simple fact is another reason that Invisalign is the perfect solution for a number of our clients.

The Cons

Naturally, there are a couple of downsides to Invisalign. The first of these is the cost of Invisalign when compared to traditional braces. Generally, the price can be as much as double than conventional braces but is best to chat with a local clinic who specializes in the solution before moving forward with a decision. Secondly, Invisalign is not always an option for all clients. In severe cases, traditional braces can be the preferred option for dentists, especially in overcrowding or impacted molar cases. Finally, depending on your lifestyle, Invisalign might not be the right choice. This is because you do need to drink red wine, coffee and smoke in moderation as the adhesive used in the aligners is weakened with these habits, and for some patients, this is not the lifestyle choices in which they want to make.

Is Invisalign right for you?

This is the golden question, and if you are considering Invisalign, it is best that you chat with a dentist that knows the process and can answer any questions that you might have. From the benefits to the cons, a great Toronto dentist will be able to ensure you find the right solution to help fix your teeth!
