Checking out F45 to get a full functional workout
If you’re anything like me and you need a few extra people to get you motivated for the gym, then F45 is a great place to go. I’m constantly torn between joining motivational group work outs and the gut-wrenching intimidation that comes with them, but I take solace in knowing that this impostor syndrome is common amongst those joining the gym, and even regulars.
The F stands for Functional training which is a mix of circuit and HIIT style workouts geared towards everyday movement and F45 is the total amount of time to get the heart pumping and the sweat dripping. We attended on a Saturday, where they have a live DJ to set the mood and a stacked 26 station class for a full body circuit. Join Jenan and I as we take you through the VIBE of F45 in Yorkville.
The Prep
Change Rooms + Amenities
The Yorkville location that we visited was a medium sized gym, with circuit stations from end to end. Those waiting for the next class have a small space by the back wall, by open shelfs that carry people’s belongings, to watch the journey they’re about to embark on. The space is well structured but not appropriate for gym loiterers (we all know the ones) you have to be spatially aware there – F45 means serious business, get in, work hard and get out.
With showers, towel service, and all other basic amenities at your service, F45 uses its space effectively. The amenities are clean but their body wash and shampoo quality could definitely be upped. There were no signs indicating which of the colorful liquids was used for what, was it shampoo, body wash, or conditioner? That was a bit confusing. I do like that they encourage people to take quick showers though.

The Workout
This type of healthy comradery and competition is a good thing. when it comes to working out one of the true indicators of a successful work out is how you feel about yourself both physically and mentally post-workout. The circuits at F45 combines muscle training for all your major muscle groups and cardio for a full body work out every time. F45 pride themselves on innovation, with over 4,000 exercises and 36 workouts in their database, you’ll never do the same workout twice. Studies show that working out in a healthy circuit or group environment can be extremely helpful to your overall performance. You’re less likely to slack and more likely to feel motivated to finish that last rep. F45 is no exception and will leave you feeling great.
Instructor(s)
The instructors at F45 are professionals that know what it takes to run a tight ship. They acknowledge our newbie presence and gave us a warm welcome into their community. A community that they undoubtedly built from the ground up. I truly believe that the success of any work out has a lot to do with those facilitating it, it’s a make or break for me. You never want a trainer that’s too soft on you, you wouldn’t be there if you were just looking for some false re-assurance about “how well you’re doing”. Alternatively, we have all experienced those jerk-offs that think humiliation is the only way to get you to work hard, (WRONG) you do not want to try that with me – trust me. You want someone who pushes you and takes you past the limits you set for yourself – and these trainers knew just how to do that. They were polite yet assertive and if they caught you slacking off they would gently guide you to the next station or help you establish your form by leading by example. Major props to them.
The Intensity, Quality + Difficulty
F45 is unique in that it accommodates beginners and pro’s equally, there’s a challenge waiting for everyone who steps in. The work out we participated in was medium to high intensity, with an amazing live DJ who visibly boosted the energy in the room. Nearing the end of the circuit, when you’re running on your reserve tank, the live music gives you the boost you need to finish. I started working out to the beat rather than the countdown.
With weighted sit ups, rope exercises, rowing and cycling these circuits are built to push your limit. With 26 different circuit stations it gives your joints and muscles a break from constant strain, meaning that it can be a great alternative to other body-building joints. Each station is designed to work a different muscle, so you won’t be over working a single part of your body, but you’ll still feel that lactic acid build-up. We did the 26 stations TWICE! As if once wasn’t enough (the fat kid in me screams). The first time around is designed to allow you to go through the motions that may your body may not be accustomed to. The second round is to focus on and nail your form, and the trainers are right there to push you along through it all.

The VIBE
The vibe at F45 is probably the best part about it, aside from the killer work out, variety of exercises and intensities and the incredible trainers – the sense of community really stood out to me here. Arguably all group work outs have some sort of community relation, but at F45 the trust in that room shines through in even the most basic ways. The fact that people felt comfortable enough to leave their belongings at the back of the room in cubbies, instead of the lockers in the back, truly set the tone for the type of relationship that you could build here, one of trust, support and friendship. We spoke to a few regulars who told us about their journey of choosing this gym and almost all of them credited the sense of community they built at F45.
The Aftermath
After a quick shower we walked out while the next class was setting up, this type of efficiency is great in my opinion, it sets the tone for the rest of the day. In and out in an hour, ready to start your day productively. We had a chance to have a quick chat with the trainer before leaving and their dedication to the business was apparent, understanding the thought and time that goes into each workout is truly inspiring and makes you feel like you’re in good hands. A great workout, especially on Saturday where you get a ton of variety and truly a FULL body workout.
