There’s been a lot of hype recently surrounding the so-called “Ghetto Gourmet” movement – evidenced around here with underground “pirate restaurants” cropping up under-the-radar throughout the Toronto community. Think of each meal as an underground potluck, except the food is prepared by world-class chefs, and instead of your crazy Uncle Danny across the table you’re rubbing elbows with rogue foodies like yourself.
There’s been some backlash, however, from the other side of the fence; those who still believe Ghetto Gourmet consists of… let’s just say… a more “economical flavour.” In honour of these incorrigible traditionalists, we’re counting down our favourite ghetto gourmet-style recipe videos from YouTuber KevOnStage. We’ll let you decide which camp you prefer.
Cajun Ramen Noodles
This one tops the list simply for its mind-blowing level of ghetto creativity. “You just sprinkle a bit of hot sauce on there and boom! You got cajun noodles.” Innovation level: genius.

French Toast
Bread. Syrup. Heat. As Leonardo da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.” (Please don’t tell him I used that here.)
Sugar Toast
Ghetto Tip: If you’re going for that caramelized flavour, sprinkle your sugar packets on the buttered white bread before putting them in the oven.

Fried Bologna Sandwich
If (and when) the smoke alarm goes off on this one, just hear it as a victory bell. Sirens of success.
Hot Dog Pizza
When ketchup packets count as gourmet pizza sauce… yes, you are certified ghetto.

Syrup Sandwich

Wish Sandwiches
Positive visualization, folks. #7 reminds us to dream.

$5 Steak and Shrimp
It’s steak. It’s $5. That’s all you need to know. (Actually… to be fair, that’s probably all you’ll want to know.)
Free Restaurant Lemonade
Free sugar packets, free ice water, free lemon wedges. Need I say more? (Just make sure you leave a tip.)
