The end of 2022 is quickly approaching, and so is one of the most iconic, must-attend events of 2023: Fête Chinoise’s annual Lunar New Year gala. After a pandemic-related pause, the event (which began in 2015) is back for the 2023 season, bringing people together to celebrate Chinese culture and raise money for good causes across the country. The gallery-style, black-tie event is sure to impress, as previous years’ galas have even won awards. Read on to find out about Fête Chinoise’s 2023 Lunar New Year gala.
About the annual gala
Established in 2015, Fête Chinoise’s annual gala is a celebration established by the namesake magazine, which is in its eighth year of publication. The award-winning event aims to “empower individuals to deepen the connection between identity and Chinese heritage in a relevant and meaningful way,” according to the press release. Yearly, the event has raised funds and awareness for various charitable organizations across the country. Previous recipients include Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation, Mon Sheong Foundation, fu-Gen Theatre Company, Orbis Canada, and the SickKids Foundation. In all, the gala boasts a net donated an amount of $300,000 to date.
About Fête Chinoise’s Lunar New Year 2023 event
The 2023 iteration of the gala will take place on January 28, and tickets can be purchased online, where individual tickets and blocks of tickets are available. It’s taking place at the Shangri-La Hotel, and the funds raised from this year’s event will be donated to the Scarborough Health Network Foundation.
Programming for the 2023 gala includes an extensive marketplace of food vendors, including Shangri-La Toronto’s signature Chinese food stations, Jamaican-Chinese plates by Toronto favourite PATOIS and chef Craig Wong, Hong Kong-style snacks by Good Catch Cafe, luxurious egg waffles by the award-winning team at Golden Bubbles, as well as offerings from SuperFresh’s Trevor Lui. Traditional, handmade Dragon Beard candy and sugar painting are also on offer.
The black-tie, red-carpet event also features a gallery presentation, showcasing Master Guan’s award-winning calligraphy and painting skills on-site, a Lunar New Year Marketplace designed by PALETTERA and Jackie O Events which is inspired by a UNESCO heritage site, and a Chinese art-inspired experiential installation designed by architect Nicky Wang.
Entertainment includes a performance by Yoyo Sham, one of Hong Kong’s award-winning singer-songwriters, Canadian-Chinese as well as a performance by Polish-Ukrainian singer-songwriter Tyler Shaw. The St. Royal Band and Wushu Project Lion Dance round out the offerings for the evening.
