On Tuesday I headed over to Spinout Cycle, the brand spanking new spin studio located in Liberty Village. I’d say my night was fun but then I’d be lying to you; it was hard… really, really hard… and by the end of the class my hands were shaking and I was ready to mow down on the entire plate of gluten-free mini muffins they had placed out for the media preview. But the difficulty aside I left convinced that I’d be back to challenge myself with another ride.
Spinout isn’t your average spin studio. Equipped with 40 computerized bikes that connect to two 60” Smart TVs, the whole point of the classes here are to inspire competition between you and the rest of the cyclers. As soon as the screens turned on our instructor Christopher informed us that we could find our bike number on the screens in front of us; with your score staring you in the face it becomes difficult not to go a little harder even if it only means beating the person in the spot just ahead of you.
I’m a super nerd so I love the idea of facts helping my workout and at Spinout they email you your distance, speed, heart rate, RPM and calories burned after each class. While tonight’s email would probably only depress me, I would love to be able to keep track of my workout regularly so that I can see how I’m improving.
I haven’t been to a spin class in almost 5 years – I’m partial to the elliptical or the treadmill – but the educated staff at Spinout made me feel like I really could do it. Prior to the class I was properly fitted for my Schwinn bike by an instructor who explained how the digital system worked, how I could check my RPM, and how I could push a little harder… if I wanted to.
Founder Hanya Kizemchuk’s vision of a digitally connected spin class came to her one day and now she’s convinced that it’s the future; having tried quite a few classes in the name of #FitnessFridays I don’t disagree. Adding a little competition to the workout certainly made me more inclined to go faster. A group fitness class I can win? Sign me up! Winning isn’t everything in the fitness world but it sure does count for a lot. Okay… it’s everything!
