Unless you have been living in one of the more remote regions of Greenland for the past two years, chances are you’ve noticed that sportswear has become a major player in fashion. Ranging from all-mesh-everything to Tom Ford team jerseys, the trend has swept across the sartorial world with the kind of mindless uniformity that you’d see in a stadium doing “the wave.”
As 2014 draws to a close, however, sportswear fans are becoming more refined and less embellished. Having been overdone by certain mass-market mall retailers (not naming names but you know who you are), the style has adopted the philosophy of “less is more.” Nowhere better is this embodied than in Frank & Oak’s newest collaboration with the Toronto FC soccer team.
The Montreal-based menswear brand has collaborated with Toronto’s first Major League Soccer team for a limited edition 8-piece collection that combines classic tailoring with traditional, athletic silhouettes. It will include fall-ready, sportswear-inspired clothing items and accessories such as a contrast sleeve t-shirt ($38); pebbled leather weekender ($295); wool varsity jacket ($345); and knit scarf ($38) — all featuring the bold Toronto FC team colours and logo.
“Toronto FC is really excited to collaborate with Frank & Oak,” said Jeff Budway, Director of Retail and Merchandise Operations at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. “It’s really an honour to have the TFC logo and colours featured on a collection designed by a leader in menswear and retail. The collaboration truly reflects the club, city, and our supporters, and we are really proud to be a part of this.”
To kick off the capsule collection, Frank & Oak and Toronto FC will host a soccer-inspired pop-up shop from October 15 – 25 at 567 Queen Street West. Soccer fans and menswear enthusiasts are invited to browse and shop the Toronto FC collection along with Frank & Oak fall basics.
The limited edition collection will also be available online at frankandoak.com, and Toronto FC’s Team Store at BMO Field (170 Princes’ Blvd), starting October 15.
