Sure, we might not write in-depth cultural critiques of everything that makes a splash on pop culture’s radar every week, but that doesn’t mean we’re not talking about it around the Vv Magazine office watercooler. That’s why, every Friday, Vv Magazine’s editors roundup the stuff we loved, hated, debated, and obsessed over during the week that was with Vv’s Over-rated/Under-rated. We’re not ashamed to admit that we do more than just keep up with the Kardashians — we have office polls on what everyone from Bruce Jenner and Kate Middleton to Marc Jacobs and Justin Trudeau will do next…
Under-rated: Kerry Washington’s InStyle Cover Is A SCANDAL!
Someone call Olivia Pope! Just in time for Black History Month, InStyle Magazine is featuring Kerry Washington looking a lot like… Christy Turlington? Refinery 29 was one of the first to question whether Photoshop was involved in the apparent lightening of Washington’s skin for the cover. If last week’s “all white Oscars”-inspired Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue cover reminded us that we still have a long journey ahead in terms of social progress, this cover is also very telling of the times.
Over-rated: Kim Kardashian’s Full Frontal Nude Vajay In LOVE Magazine
If Kim Kardashian’s full frontal photo shoot for Paper Magazine was any indication of where we’d be in terms of censorship in 2015, her latest photo shoot for LOVE Magazine, featuring Kim baring her nude vulva one more time, proved skin is not only in right now, it’s actually no big deal. And that brings us to…
Under-rated: Full Frontal Is The New Cleavage
Kate Upton may have caused a stir when she scored back-to-back Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition covers — the first model since Tyra Banks to do so — but we love that Hannah Davis’ notably less voluptuous bikini bod got the coveted career-making cover shot. While her bikini top is surprisingly not-so revealing, her low-cut bikini bottom made us wonder if full frontal is the new cleavage.
Under-rated: The “Plus-Sized Model” Debate Starring Robyn Lawley
Model Robyn Lawley is heating up the pages of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition as well, with social media abuzz over the fact that Lawley’s the first “plus-sized” rookie to grace the pages of the famous skin-baring magazine marketed mainly to straight men. “I don’t know if I consider myself as a plus-size model or not,” Lawley told TIME Magazine. “I just consider myself a model because I’m trying to help women in general accept their bodies… I want to be there for the regular girls who are my size.” While everyone else is debating about what dimensions make for a plus-sized model, we’ve been too busy thinking, “Damn, aren’t women beautiful?”
Under-rated: The Heartbreaking Realities Of Mental Health
TMZ’s made a name for itself being the first source to break Hollywood news. This week was no exception with TMZ reporting that the late Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, is in such critical condition that doctors have asked her father Bobby Brown if he wants to take her off life support. Brown is apparently waiting until after the weekend to make a decision. Bobbi Kristina has been in a medically-induced coma since Saturday after she was found face down in her bathtub. When penning these kinds of traffic-generating breaking “news” stories, we hope more publications also take the opportunity to open up the conversation about mental health by perhaps using a #BellLetsTalk hashtag or something else that takes about 2 seconds to add to a post but could maybe help save a life. Or does that effect their SEO? Who knows…
