Today is Equal Pay Day in Ontario, falling on April 7th this year. This is an indicator of how many extra days into the new year that the average woman would have to work in order to earn the same amount that her male counterpart did in the previous year. That’s an extra 97 days of work. Women have come a long way thanks to those who came before us and fought hard for our freedoms, but unfortunately in Ontario, the gender pay gap is still nearly 30% for all women in the province and the gap increases even more for those who are considered to be indigenous, immigrant, visible minority or disabled.
To call attention to this gap, cannabis corporation 48North has partnered with retailer Cori on an initiative where all of their products/brands within 48North will be sold at a 30% discount this Equal Pay Day.
“At 48North, we believe that women deserve equal pay and that it is imperative that we show our support. Our goal with this initiative is to draw attention to how big of a gap 30 percent is and to help bring awareness to the cause,”Nadine De Albuquerque, Director of Brand.
