Have you ever gone shopping and while waiting in line for the register wondered, Don’t I own something like this already? We all have our fashion crutches – our go-to items and colours that make us comfortable and that we know will look good. But too much of the same thing can feel boring and uninspired, and that’s when we get into a style rut. Being in a style rut doesn’t have to be a bad thing. If anything, that’s when we’re most receptive to change and most willing to try something a little daring. If you’ve ever found yourself staring into a full closet with the feeling that you have nothing to wear, then try these tips on how to dig yourself out of a style rut…
Ask A Professional
There are lots of stores that offer complimentary personal shopping services, like The Bay, Holt Renfrew, or J. Crew. Most malls will also provide personal shopping services, although usually for a fee. When you book an appointment, come prepared to talk about what you like and dislike about your wardrobe, what your budget is, whether you have a specific occasion you’re shopping for, and maybe some celebrities whose style inspires you.
Clean Out Your Closet
It may seem counter-intuitive to clean out your closet when you feel like you have nothing to wear, but sorting and donating unwanted clothes can actually make you feel like there’s more in your closet. By eliminating the clutter, you can actually see all the possibilities of your wardrobe instead of all the items that you don’t wear.
Complete Your Outfits
When cleaning out your closet, you’ll probably find items that you bought, love, but never wear because you don’t have the right shoes, skirt, bra, or whatever to go with them. Instead of tossing those items, make a list of things that you need to complete those outfits. That way you can specifically look out for each of those items the next time you go shopping.
Choose Bold Accessories
Accessories are a great way to experiment with another style without making a complete transformation – whether it’s glam, boho, girlie, indie, or edgy. You can also spice up your regular outfits by introducing a splash of colour (like with a new purse, scarf, or pair of shoes) or by pairing your outfit with some bold statement jewelry.
Plan Your Outfits
Probably the number one reason people fall into a style rut is not enough time to put together something new. Most of us have all the elements to make a fun, new outfit, but when we’re in a hurry in the morning it’s often easier to go with an old standby. Try planning out your outfits the night before; that way you’ll have enough time to try on a few different options and try some combinations you’ve never thought of before.
