If ever there was a winter that couldn’t end sooner, this one is it. With extreme cold weather advisories and polar vortices an almost daily occurrence, even the most seasoned arctic veteran is yearning for some relief. Enter Wiarton Willie. On Groundhog Day, this venerable marmot emerged from his burrow and saw his shadow, essentially stating that the frosty torment will continue for another six weeks…
But surely it’s not just groundhogs that have these powers of prognostication. Are there are other creatures in the animal kingdom with similar abilities? Of course there are: From the magnificent dolphin to the lowly armadillo, animals are celebrated for their predictive abilities around the world. Here are but a few examples…
January 30th – Los Angeles, California – Golden Retriever Day
On this day if Buddy, the golden retriever from the Air Bud franchise of movies, barks an even number of times, then LA’s weather for the year will be sunny, not too hot in the summer, not too cold in the winter, with very little rain. If he barks an odd number of times, then LA’s weather for the year will be… uh… sunny, not too hot in the summer, not too cold in the winter, with very little rain. (*Cough.*)
February 22nd – Paris, France – Smallmouth Bass Day
If Beauregard the Smallmouth bass jumps out of the River Seine and makes a splash, then the Oscars host will be funny this year. If there is no splash, then they will bomb horribly. If you manage to catch Beauregard and fry him up for dinner, then Billy Crystal will host the Oscars until the end of time.
March 17th – Nairobi, Kenya – Wildebeest Day
On this day, if wildebeest on their annual migration and stampede happen to kill Mufasa, the king of the lions, then prince Simba will leave town and befriend a flatulent warthog and his wisecracking meerkat life-partner. After a whimsical romp through the Serengeti, Simba will return to defeat his treacherous uncle Scar and assume the throne of the Lion King. If the Wildebeest pass by uneventfully, then the Disney Corporation will miss out on over a billion dollars in revenue.
July 9th – Moscow, Russia – Naked Mole-Rat Day
If the naked mole-rats at the Moscow Zoo decide to wear clothing on July 9th, then Pauly Shore will once more become a celebrity. If, on the other hand, the animals remain naked, frolicking in the buff, then Mr. Shore will remain far from the limelight, comfortable in his obscurity, but yearning for the day when he can once again be lovingly embraced by the masses.
Happy Groundhog Day, here’s hoping for an early spring… despite the groundhog’s powers of premonition.
