Lately, there have been some girls absolutely killing it in the music scene. Brittany Howard from Alabama Shakes is a powerhouse. Lorde released “Royals” and now that we know she’s only 16, every girl her age is rethinking her life… or at least that’s what I’m hoping for. Last week, she tweeted “haim girls are FEARLESS I love it.” Having no idea what she was talking about and well… who doesn’t want extra tips on being a little fearless? I did some Googling and found a band made up three sisters from Los Angeles: Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim…and they are damn cool. Their music is like this intricate braid of ’90s R&B and pop with funky guitar, fun synth and really amazing harmonies. To be honest, I’ve listened to their debut album Days Are Gone (streaming on NPR.org) every day since finding out about them.
Any girl who grew up in the ’90s like Haim did will not only enjoy songs like “Falling” and “Don’t Save Me,” but I think will completely relate to the lyrics. Truthfully, it’s kind of nice hearing a song about how a breakup can feel good and right for a girl rather than leave them like a “wrecking ball.” The Haim girls are fearless. Rocking out, having fun, long hair, don’t care. Don’t be surprised if you want to start your own kickass all girl rock band after listening to them. I know I did… and I’d like to stay confident that it was a natural urge.
Unfortunately, they’re not coming to Toronto in the near future because they’re touring Europe with Phoenix. In the meantime, make sure to buy and listen (over and over and over again) to their debut album, Days Are Gone. It’s released tomorrow!
Catch Haim on Facebook and Twitter, and listen to the band on NPR. Haim’s first album can be ordered on iTunes.
