If you’ve ever spent a portion of your day procrastinating by looking at Buzzfeed lists (just me? Ok) then you know there is no shortage of 90s nostalgia on the site. As a 90s baby myself, I can’t help but feel a sense of generational pride. And it seems like I’m not alone, as 90s beauty has been popping up faster than new restaurants on Dundas West. If #ThrowbackThursday just isn’t enough, here are some tips to build your very own 90s-inspired beauty arsenal:
Kylie Jenner Lips
While not technically 90s, this Kardashian teen definitely took inspiration from her fashion predecessors with her accentuated lip look. Achieve this look by overdrawing your lips: fill in your lips with a neutral pink and then extend your lip line slightly over the top of your upper lips. To create the signature Kylie flair, line your lips with a dark liner to create an exaggerated look. For a great tutorial, check out makeup artist Kandee Johnson on YouTube (below).
Clueless Ty Hair
While it’s easy to go for the obvious choice (Cher), Ty’s ‘ugly duckling’ transformation in this quintessential 90s film led to many memorable moments (Rolling with the homies!). Get yourself some curls a la Ty with a true vintage beauty technique: pin curls. To get the look, take a strand of hair and twist it in a spiral motion around your finger, moving upwards towards the scalp. Use a bobby pin to secure the hair spiral to your head, and repeat. For best results, leave the curls overnight and take down the next morning.
Get in touch with your inner angst-filled teen. Put on some Pearl Jam and dig deep into your makeup bag for the darkest lip colour you can find. In honour of fall, pick up my personal favourite shade, Cyber from MAC. Keep the rest of your face makeup free, save for a strong, dark brow using Make Up For Ever’s gel eyebrow-filling wonder, Aqua Brow.
The 90s weren’t solely owned by brooding gothic queens. Fresh-faced, dewy makeup gave the dark days of the decade a ray of beauty hope. Pastel palettes and light-frosted lips were the name of the game. For a budget-friendly lip option, look to NYC Cosmetics for its Liquid Lipshine. It comes in a variety of shades and probably costs less than an Americano from your favourite local café.
No true 90s look is complete with a spritz of scent. Splash on a bit of Tommy Girl for a light, floral fragrance. If you’re after a serious dose of nostalgia, track down some Calgon spray from a local drug store. I promise you’ll be instantly transported onto the set of Ten Things I Hate About You (RIP Heath Ledger).
