Getting clean is one of the toughest things to tackle in life, which is part of why 40 – 60% of addicts will relapse from their treatment plan.
Getting sober is also intimidating. It can be hard to look forward to something when you can’t imagine what it will look like. It can be difficult to imagine a life in recovery, free from the slavery of addiction.
Rehab is unbelievably helpful in segueing from addiction to recovery. It gives your body a chance to recuperate while you practice living a healthy lifestyle.

If you’re wondering “How does rehab work?”, here’s what a typical day in rehab looks like.
How Does Rehab Work?
While every rehab program is different, here is a general overview of what you can expect when you can expect when checking into a treatment facility. It will give you a glimpse of what happens in rehab.
Detox
No matter what you’ve been using, you’re going to have to go through a detox period. This is normally the first step of the intake process. You will undergo a 24-hour medically supervised detoxification, at the very least.
This is one of the best reasons to check into a treatment program. Withdrawing from anything can be incredibly dangerous. At times, it can be fatal.

Evaluation and Assessment
After you’ve detoxed, you will be assessed by the doctors and psychologists of the treatment facility. They’ll determine your physical and mental health to decide on a treatment program that will work best for you.
Breakfast and Morning Meetings
Your days will start bright and early when you’re in a treatment program. You’ll wake up, have a healthy breakfast, and launch into the first round of daily meetings.
This is another huge benefit of going to a treatment facility.
As addicts and alcoholics, we don’t always have the most healthy lifestyles or routines. Spending some time in a rehab facility will help you get used to these healthy habits, ingraining them into your daily routine.
Afternoon Therapy
Afternoons tend to be the most intensive part of the day. Generally, after lunch, you’ll meet your counselor for a one-on-one therapy session. This is usually followed by a group therapy session.

It’s rare to encounter talk therapy in today’s busy world, where doctors are quick with the prescriptions and short on time. Make the most of the individualized attention and try and get to the root of your addiction.
Sharing in front of others in group therapy is also incredibly valuable. You’ll learn to be vulnerable and honest, so you’ll feel less need to hide behind substances and unhealthy behavior.
Free Time
Your time in rehab won’t be all work and no play. You’ll get some hours to yourself in the afternoon, usually before dinner, to do your own thing and focus on your recovery in your own unique way.

12-Step Meetings
While there are many ways to get and stay sober, there’s no over-emphasizing the efficacy of 12-step programs in establishing new and healthy habits and lifestyles. Addicts and alcoholics have been helping each other stay clean since 1934 using the 12 steps.
Becoming familiar with the 12 steps will help you re-acclimate to your life outside of treatment when you emerge, fresh and clean and with a new lease on life.
