Like rail-thin runway models, beauty bloggers are often written off as frivolous and unworthy of much respect. People assume their work is easy-peasy and contains little (if any) significant value…
Contrary to such assumptions, being a beauty blogger (and we’re talking about the successful ones here, who have actually amassed a sizeable batch of followers) is tough with a capital T. Standing out amidst a sea of eager, bonkers-for-beauty babes – all wanting to do the exact same thing – is no small feat.
Here’s how they do it…
Content is King
As cliché as that is, it’s simply the truth. Whatever the allure, readers need to get hooked. Have a knack for enormously engaging storytelling? Then infuse that into your pieces. Possess a spunky personality that your friends can’t get enough of? Put it to good use bringing your posts to life. Great at giving advice without offending, like a close girlfriend as opposed to a dismissive, apathetic saleswoman? Let that be your drawing card.
Stay at It
Put out golden nuggets of beauty goodness frequently and consistently to garner a significant following. If your blog posts are especially spectacular (we’re talking high-res photos, news on upcoming line launches, terrific tips and tricks that can’t be found elsewhere), you might be able to win the hearts and eyeballs of your readers with weekly or biweekly posts.
Use Social Media Strategically
Be likeable and relatable. Follow top notch beauty blogs, magazines, beauty-obsessed tweeps and your favourite beauty brands via Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and more. Connect with them on an ongoing basis: re-pin/retweet/repost their best content, “like” their insightful tips, respond to their questions and let them know how much you luv ‘em. This is a great way to expand your niche network, keep up-to-date on the hottest trends and learn about industry events, webinars and even tweetups that you can attend.
Network Your Heart Out (IRL, as in “in real life”)
Even in this day and age, nothing is as impacting as a bit of banter, a warm smile and a firm handshake. Convey how passionate you are about beauty blogging and how great of a gal (or guy) you are. Leave them with a business card and send them some virtual love post-meet.
Follow these steps and pretty soon, you could be joining the ranks of fan faves such as Shop Pretty, Beautezine and beautyeditor.
