As a beauty editor, you’d better believe I have a a strict and thought out skincare routine. But when an email popped into my inbox about a haircare routine, I was shocked that it had never dawned on me to create one. Of course I wash my hair and style it like every other human but the thought of treating a haircare routine like a skincare routine was such sounded crazy to not think of it myself.
Now that I’ve woken up and am ready to dig into all that entails a haircare routine, I did some digging. We are so encompassed by our skincare routines and if you’re like me, you refuse to go to bed without completing all 12 steps. However, when it comes to our hair (or my hair at least) we wash it half-hazardly, apply little to no product, and then use a variety of hot tools to make it do what we want it to. Then when split-ends, breakage, and fall out occur, we’re somehow shocked.

But don’t worry because it’s never too late for you and your tresses. I had the chance to chat with Clarissa de Queiroz, the founder of The Hair Routine who firmly believes that a completely personalized and effective haircare routine will ensure long-term hair health and encourage hair growth.
The Hair Routine is pretty revolutionary because, through the app, you can take their hair consultation which involves answering a few simple q’s about your hair type and texture. After that, it’s super easy because they’ll put together your ideal haircare routine using the Balancing Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as the Moisture, Nurture, and Repair Treatments. Plus, the app will then create a tailored hair washing schedule to match your hair needs with a unique combination of both the shampoo and conditioner and the treatments.
1) How does one figure out what our hair needs?
Knowing what our hair needs is definitely challenging as it could be difficult to understand what is the missing ingredient or balance of ingredients to getting our hair healthy again. The good thing is that hair is composed of 3 simple ingredients – water, oil and protein – and at The Hair Routine, we make it easy to identify what your hair needs by answering a few simple questions on our website to identify when and what to use on your hair.
2) Do you have any advice on how to put together a hair care routine?
It’s hard to create a hair routine, as it is not a repeatable process, and every shower varies a lot between one person to the next. That’s why we simplify the process of creating a routine. Through our app, you can get a personalized calendar and receive reminders on what to do on a specific hair washing day. We also have a line of sustainable and high-performing products that make it possible for anyone to follow their routine.
3) To maintain healthy hair, how often should we be washing our hair?
This really varies for every person. Ideally the less we wash our hair the better. However, our lifestyle and change in seasons determine how often we should be washing our hair as build-up could be caused by chlorine in pools, styling products, sweat and even pollution.
4) Most people focus on the hair itself and not enough on the scalp. Can you elaborate on why scalp care is so crucial?
Our skin is the body’s largest organ and everything we put on it is directly absorbed into our bloodstream. We usually worry and take extra care of our face. Our scalp is the continuation of the face with many more pores absorbing everything we put on it. That is why we must be careful about what we choose to put on our scalp and be aware of all the ingredients in our products.
5) A common misconception is that oils of any kind are bad – can you share a little about why oils are an integral part of a healthy hair routine?
Oil is one of the 3 components that make up the structure of our hair and so is very important to be included as part of everyone’s routine. There is a purpose for the oils our scalp produces as these are essential to nourish the length of the hair but because in our modern life we wash our hair often, we need to give the hair those oils from other sources like vegetable oils. Oils add shine, definition and protect the body of the hair from pollutants and toxins.
