If you’re new to the grilling world, then you might be surprised at how many different types of grills there are. When you think back to your childhood, you might remember a family member grilling outback during family get-togethers. You’ve been around grills before, you’ve seen others grills, and you might have even grilled your own delicious meals in the past.

This doesn’t mean, however, that you know everything there is to know about the different types of grills available to you. Do you know what type of grill you used in the past? Do you know what kind of grill you’re looking for today?

There’s more to grill shopping than you might realize. The type of grill that will work best for you depends not only on your personal grilling style but on the type of flavor you enjoy as well. Finding the right grill can become an overwhelming experience, but we’re here to help.

Continue reading below for everything you need to know about finding the best grill for your grilling needs!

1. Gas Grills

Gas grills are essential for grilling gurus who need an optimal amount of grilling space paired with an easy-to-use device. Gas grills are the more common type of grill found in backyards. If you grew up watching your family members grill outback, then it was most likely on a gas grill.

Gas grills are wonderful for backyard parties because they provide enough room on the grill to cook lots of items at one time. These grills also heat up quickly and are easy to clean!

The downfall is that you won’t experience as much of that smokey flavor that so many grillers desire.

2. Smokers

Smokers are also a larger type of grill. You’ll be able to cook large portions of meats in your smoker. Smokers are most commonly found in BBQ restaurants and are normally used by BBQ professionals.

Don’t let this stop you from purchasing one, however. Smokers are now becoming more popular inside the home. They provide that wonderful smokey flavor that other grills can’t.

Smokers are ideal for people who don’t mind a slow-cooked meal. These grills cook meats on low for a long period of time.

3. Outdoor Electric Grills

Outdoor electric grills are the perfect type of grill for those with a limited amount of space. Most apartment and condo renters or owners are not allowed to use other types of grills or simply don’t have space for them. You can place an outdoor electric grill on a patio, balcony, lanai, or something similar.

You will, however, need an outlet to plug the grill into. As long as you have an outlet nearby, you can begin grilling with ease! Plug your grill in, grill up your favorite foods, and then clean it with ease.

You won’t have to worry about cleaning up the charcoal or replenishing empty propane and gas tanks.

4. Charcoal Grills

Charcoal grills are one of the more affordable options that you have. These grills are ideal for smaller gatherings and will only satisfy those looking for a good charcoal flavor.

For those smokey-flavor lovers, a charcoal grill is a great option. Do keep in mind that using a charcoal grill means that you won’t have any temperature controls and they do take longer to heat up than gas or electric grills. Charcoal grills will also get a lot hotter than other types of grills as well.

To control the heating temperature, you’ll need to learn how to create direct heat and indirect heat for different areas of the grill. If you love a nice smokey flavor and don’t mind having to clean up ashes and charcoal after using it, then a charcoal grill is right for you!

For a more even grilling experience, discover more about infrared grills, which can make grilling a much more enjoyable experience altogether!

5. Portable Grills

Portable grills are the perfect type of grill for those who love to grill on the go! If you enjoy camping with friends and family often or planning family days in the park, then you’ll love having a good portable grill by your side.

These grills do use propane to function, so a small propane tank comes with the grill. They’re easy to use and easy to store so no matter if it’s a tailgating event or a day at the beach, you’ll be able to cook up all of your grilling favorites!

These grills are much smaller than others due to their portable abilities, so you won’t be able to cook huge meals for a large crowd on them at one time.

6. Woodfire Grills

Woodfire grills provide a type of smokey flavor that can’t be found using any other type of grill. The woodfire grill was the first type of grill to be used and works well for those who enjoy the more traditional style of grilling.

It does take a bit of time for these grills to get going as you’ll need to wood to burn correctly and hot enough to start grilling. You’ll also need to remember to replace the wood when running out, which can sometimes become costly.

Although this type of grill does have some downfalls, it’s worth it to many grillers who can’t get enough of that wood-smoked flavor!
