Late Friday afternoon and I am suffering from a slight hangover (no judgment please) and am absurdly tired from a busy week and the threat of an even busier weekend. Nicki and I are forced to play hooky for an hour or so in order to stock up on food and goodies to celebrate our good friend Joe’s birthday later that night. Stop one is our lovely buddy Angelo at Waterfront Seafood Market at Dixie and Burnhamthorpe. He deserves the shameless plug… his sushi grade salmon is fabulous, I would never dream of eating it any way other than raw. Onto the veggie store across the way for some produce, a dash into the supermarket and a prolonged peruse in the LCBO. By the time we stop to pick up Joe’s cookie cake from Sweet Flour in Bloor West Village, I am grumpy, tired and whiney. I am praying I have enough time for a nap before the festivities begin.
The aroma on entering this quaint little store is enough to shake my thundery demeanour. As we approach the counter I realize this isn’t your run-of-the-mill cookie store. There’s no prepackaged, ‘made off site’ nonsense going on here. This is custom made, fresh-out-of-the-oven goodness. And when I say fresh, I’m not messing around.

First, you choose your dough: oatmeal, traditional or peanut butter. Next, you choose what goes in your dough; Snicker pieces, chocolate chips, toffee, cherries, raisins… the list goes on. Your choices are combined and they pop the mixture into one of the mini cookie ovens behind the counter. 2 minutes later and the piping hot cookie is smothered in your choice of topping… salted caramel, chocolate ganache, peanut butter, maple or vanilla crème. After letting it cool for the longest 45 seconds of your life, the tasty little treat is released into your greedy paws and the cookie carnage ensues.
On expert recommendation, we opted for traditional dough with Snicker pieces and salted caramel topping. It was heavenly. Needless to say my mood went from drab to delightful and the sugar high kept me going until dinner. Sparkly Sam was saved and Stroppy Sam was locked away until Saturday morning…
