Mexican and Asian are at the top of almost everyone’s favourite foods, so when you fuse the two cuisines together, you’re sure to get a delicious result. Case in point: La Brea, the cool older sister of Kanpai Snack Bar, spearheaded by Trevor Lui.
After a short hiatus, the #MexicAsian food vendor is making a triumphant return in the form of a monthly pop-up. Once a month for the next three months, you can experience a mash-up of Taiwanese & Mexican flavours at Kanpai. And to make the return even more appealing, Kanpai has partnered with Jarritos, the iconic Mexican soft drink, to provide a variety of unique cocktails, including a delicious Barrios Chinos made with tequila, wine and Jarritos lime.
“Toronto is a hot bed for cultural cuisines. Before Kanpai, the same owners brought La Brea to the city to critical acclaim with an infusion of blended Asian and Mexican flavours and techniques,” Lui tells us. “Jarritos also played a big part in many of those pop-ups as a thirst-quenching accompaniment to their intense flavours. What better place to bring La Brea back than Kanpai Snack Bar, augmenting our most popular Taiwanese dishes with classic Mexican favourites and pairing them with unique Jarritos-infused cocktails.”
Menu items include wonton tortilla chips served alongside guacamame (guacamole with edamame) and srirachamama (a spicier Sriracha-edamame dip), slow simmered pork bone pozole with ramen, tinga de pollo bao torta, dulce de leche filled churros, and more.
You’ll be able to quench your thirst with Jarritos and Jarritos infused cocktails at Kanpai Snack Bar daily until the end of July. La Brea’s mouthwatering #MexicAsian menu will be available the last Monday of May, June and July.
