Welcome to Mini Makeover Monday! In this weekly column, Bianca Teixeira, our new makeover maven, will find, test and report back on an assortment of small changes that can be made to your daily beauty and style routine that can dramatically change your look. Let us know if you try any of her suggestions and what kind of effect they had on you!
When you look at photos from the golden era of Hollywood, what’s the first thing you notice about stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Joan Crawford or Sophia Lauren? For me, it’s their big, bold eyebrows. And if done right, bold brows are absolutely eye catching. I reiterate: when done right. And I can tell you that for a while, I was doing it oh-so very wrong!
When I had short hair and wanted my face to stand out more, I would lightly coat my brows in black mascara. Yes, it gave me my desired look (stark black brows against pale skin) but I stopped the practice when I found myself caught in a rainstorm one night. Oh, the horror. Thanks to stunning celebs like Lily Collins and Cara Delevingne and Spring ’14 runways like Tom Ford and Jil Sander, fuller brows have been making a huge comeback for the last while. If your brows aren’t naturally full/you’ve plucked so much they don’t grow back/you simply want bolder brows, I have a few tips and tricks for you…
Using a spoolie (an eyebrow shaping tool that resembles a mascara wand) brush your eyebrows up and away from your eyes to see what their natural shape is. Trim any hairs that noticeably point out, but don’t go too short… you want the length to keep from having any bald spots.
I like to use the brow kit from Too Faced. It includes a tool with a spoolie on one end and an angled brow brush on the other. The compact brow definer is a powder, gel, pencil, and setting wax all in one cashmere clay formula.
Apply the setting wax before filling in your brows. Using the brush, apply the colour in short, quick, hair-like strokes. Run the spoolie over the brow again to soften any harsh lines and comb out any chunks that may have become lodged. Apply the wax once more to set the colour and keep brow hairs in place throughout the day. For added oomph, blend in a soft brow highlight or illuminator directly under the arches for a beautiful accent.
For a bolder, ‘smoky’ eyebrow look, begin by applying the wax but outline the brows with a soft grey liner. Replace your brown brow powder with a grey cream shadow using the same short, hair-like strokes. Finish with the same wax and illuminator tricks to really make them stand out. It goes without saying that a strong brow look should be paired up with a more natural makeup palette so you don’t look too overly ‘done’.
Too Faced Bulletproof Brows brow definer is sold at Sephora in-store and online for $38.00.
